Athletes of the Week for November 14, 2022

Women’s Cross Country

Anna Kenig-Ziesler  —  University of Chicago  —  Chicago, IL (University Lab School)

Senior Anna Kenig-Ziesler of University of Chicago finished fourth in a field of 204 runners at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional to earn All-Region status. She helped lead the Maroons to a runner-up team finish in the 29-team field, crossing the finish line in a six-kilometer time of 22:03.6.

Men’s Cross Country

Jack Begley  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Worthington Kilbourne)

Senior Jack Begley of Case Western Reserve University placed third in the 271-runner field at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional. He covered the eight-kilometer course in a career-best time of 24:26.8 to lead the Spartans to a runner-up team finish.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Mia Han  —  Emory University —  Chesterfield, VA (Trinity Episcopal School)

Emory University junior Mia Han scored four goals as the Eagles advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship Round of 16 for the first time since 2013. She netted a hat trick in the first 20 minutes of the Eagles’ opening round 7-0 rout of Piedmont University. Han scored the game-tying goal in the second overtime period to give the Eagles a 3-3 draw with Centre College. Emory earned the right to move on in penalty kicks.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Helena Locateli  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Sierra Madre, CA (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy)

First year defender Helena Locateli helped Carnegie Mellon University to back-to-back shutouts in the first two rounds of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. Making her first two starts of the season, Locateli helped the defense limit opponents to a combined one shot on goal and served in the corner kick that led to the Tartans’ first goal in a 2-0 win over 10th-ranked Calvin University on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Naz Kabbani  — University of Chicago  —  Manchester , England (Manchester Grammar School)

University of Chicago senior midfielder Naz Kabbani recorded his first career hat trick to lead the second-ranked Maroons to a 4-1 win over 25th-ranked Willamette University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. He tallied the game’s first goal in the 49th minute and then scored twice in a seven-minute span to give the Maroons a 4-0 lead late in the game.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Richard Gillespie  —  University of Chicago  —  Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Country Day School)

University of Chicago senior defender Richard Gillespie paced the defense that limited two opponents to six shots on goal and one late score each in the first two rounds of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. The Maroons remain undefeated with a 2-1 win over Birmingham-Southern College and Willamette University.

Volleyball

Olivia Lewandowski  —  NYU  —  San Diego, CA (Del Norte)

Sophomore outside hitter Olivia Lewandowski averaged 3.33 kills per set while registering double-digit kill totals in all three NYU victories in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship regional hosted by Wesleyan University. She hit .323 for the weekend, capping off the Violets’ trip to the national quarterfinals with 16 kills and a .424 hitting percentage in a four-set victory over Williams College in the regional final.

Ava Launsbach  —  NYU  —  Los Angeles, CA (Marlborough School)

NYU first-year setter Ava Launsbach averaged 5.83 assists and 2.08 digs as NYU won all three of its matches at the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship regional hosted by Wesleyan University. She registered 23 assists and 10 digs in a four-set win over Williams College in the regional final that sent the Violets to the national quarterfinals.

Women’s Basketball

Claire Brock  —  Emory University  —  Knoxville, TN (Christian Academy of Knoxville)

Senior Claire Brock averaged 25.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as Emory University opened the season with a 3-0 record. She netted 20 points or more in all three wins, including a career-high 33 points in Saturday’s 87-70 win at Colorado College. Brock shot 61.7 percent from the field (29-for-47) and 66.7 percent from three-point range (12-of-18).

Men’s Basketball

Toby Harris  —  Brandeis University  —  Durham, NC (Durham Academy)

Sophomore forward Toby Harris averaged 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game as Brandeis University began the season with a pair of victories. He scored a career-high 30 points in the season-opener, hitting five 3-pointers, in a 77-58 win over Salem State University. In two games, Harris shot 69.0 percent from the floor (20-for-29) and 56.3 percent from three-point range (9-of-16).

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Eliana Szabo  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Hudson, OH (Hudson)

Carnegie Mellon University first-year swimmer Eliana Szabo won three individual events in the Tartans’ 199-63 dual meet win over Washington and Lee University. She touched first in the 100-yard freestyle (52.62 seconds), 200-yard freestyle (1:55.55), and 100-yard butterfly (59.07 seconds).

Kelli Kuramoto  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Los Altos, CA (Los Altos)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Kelli Kuramoto placed first in both diving events in a diving competition against Kenyon College, securing her participation at the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championships in March. She posted season-best scores of 302.48 and 302.55 on the one- and three-meter dives, respectively.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Aleksander Tarczynski  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Springfield, VA (West Springfield)

Senior Aleksander Tarczynski earned victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a 192-70 dual meet win against Washington and Lee University. He posted times of 46.26 seconds in the freestyle and 1:54.36 in the butterfly. 

Jud Kyle  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)

Graduate student Jud Kyle placed second on the one-meter board and third on the three-meter board with NCAA regional qualifying marks as Carnegie Mellon University competed in a diving competition with Kenyon College. His scores of 322.88 and 304.43 in the one- and three-meter events, respectively, secured his spot at the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championships in March.

Wrestling

Jason Geyer  —  NYU  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Seneca Valley)

Senior Jason Geyer captured the 174-pound weight bracket at the Racich Rumble hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday. He won his first three bouts by technical fall before securing a 5-0 decision in the semifinal round and pinning his State University of New York at Cortland opponent in the final. The 10th-ranked Violets finished fifth in the 14-team field.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
