Athletes of the Week for November 18, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Paige Lawler  —  Washington University  —  Lexington, MA (Lexington)

Washington University senior Paige Lawler won the individual title at the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Midwest Regional on Saturday. She finished the six-kilometer course in 21:53.0, besting the runner-up by 20 seconds, to help lead the Bears to the team title.

Men’s Cross Country

Jack Whetstone  —  Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Emory University junior Jack Whetstone earned individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country South/Southeast Regional Championship. He posted an eight-kilometer time of 24:49.3, bettering the runner-up by 16.7 seconds, in leading the Eagles to the team title.

Ryan Cutter  —  University of Chicago  —  El Sobrante, CA (Hercules)

University of Chicago junior Ryan Cutter won the individual title at the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Midwest Regional. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:32.6 to top the field of 252 runners.

Football – Offense

Marco Cobian  —  University of Chicago  —  Ramona, CA (Ramona)

Marco Cobian completed 28 of 38 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in his final collegiate game to lead University of Chicago to a 35-21 victory over Lake Forest College. He tossed two scoring passes in three plays (the Maroons recovered a fumbled kickoff), covering 76 and 38 yards.

Football – Defense

Sean Knight  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Canaan, CT (New Canaan)

Sophomore Sean Knight picked off two passes, returning one 37 yards for his first career touchdown, to help lead Carnegie Mellon University to a 24-21 victory over previously unbeaten Case Western Reserve University in the 34th Annual Academic Bowl. He also recovered a fumble and tied a career-best with four solo tackles.

Football – Special Teams

Chris Vartanian  —  Washington University —  Newport Beach, CA (St. Margaret’s Episcopal)

Freshman kicker Chris Vartanian connected on a pair of field goals and made all six extra points as Washington University concluded the Larry Kindbom era with a 62-14 win at Carroll University. He made a season-long 47-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Alex Adams  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)

First-year forward Alex Adams scored twice and assisted on three goals as Carnegie Mellon University won a pair of games in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. She totaled two goals and two assists in a 7-0 opening-round win over Cairn College on Saturday and then assisted on the only score in a win over Swarthmore College on Sunday.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Gabbie Cesarone  —  Washington University  —  St. Charles, IL (St. Charles North)

Sophomore back Gabbie Cesarone anchored third-ranked Washington University’s defense in a pair of shutout victories as the Bears advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship round of 16 for the eighth time in the past nine seasons. Cesarone netted the first goal in a 2-0 win over Adrian College in the second round. The Bears yielded a combined five shots on goal in the two wins.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Kameron Bloye  — University of Chicago  —  Allen Park, MI (University of Detroit Jesuit)

Freshman forward Kameron Bloye scored twice to lead University of Chicago to a 4-1 win over Dominican University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Will Eisold  —  University of Rochester  —  Pipersville, PA (Central Bucks East)

Sophomore defender Will Eisold contributed to the University of Rochester defense that limited two opponents to a combined seven shots on goal in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. The Yellowjackets held Hanover College to three shots on goal in a 1-0 win in the first round and then held ninth-ranked Kenyon College to four shots in a 2-1 overtime loss in which Eisold netted the team’s goal.

Volleyball

Morgan McKnight  —  Emory University  —  Manassas, VA (Flint Hill)

Senior outside hitter Morgan McKnight was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Atlanta Regional after leading Emory University to the regional title. She averaged 5.0 kills per set, while hitting .414. McKnight totaled 19 kills, four digs, and two blocks in the Eagles’ sweep of eighth-ranked Colorado College in the final.

Cassie Srb  —  Emory University  —  Seabrook, TX (Clear Falls)

First-year setter Cassie Srb earned a spot on the NCAA Division III Volleyball Atlanta Regional All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.10 assists per set as Emory University earned the regional title with three wins. She recorded 53 assists and eight digs in a four-set Eagles’ win over 20th-ranked Transylvania University, and totaled 40 assists in a sweep of eighth-ranked Colorado College in the final.

Women’s Basketball

Janean Cuffee  —  NYU  —  New York, NY (The Lawrenceville School)

NYU junior guard Janean Cuffee averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists, averaging just 21.7 minutes per game, in a 3-0 week for the Violets. She shot 52.0 percent (26 of 50) from the field for the week and earned all-tournament honors at the NYU Classic over the weekend. Cuffee netted 33 points, adding 10 rebounds and six assists, in the Violets’ 98-77 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the title game.

Men’s Basketball

Chandler Jones  —  Brandeis University  —  Springfield, MA (Springfield Commonwealth Academy)

Brandeis University junior forward Chandler Jones posted career-highs of 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Judges to a 91-56 win at Rivier College. He recorded his eighth career double-double by halftime with 13 points and 11 boards. Jones, who sunk 12 of 16 free throws, also tied for game-high honors with three assists and two steals.

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Gets  —  Brandeis University  —  Morganville, NJ (Freehold Township)

Senior Jessica Gets of Brandeis University finished 14-1 in foil at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University. She posted 3-0 marks in victories over Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Sacred Heart University, and won two of three bouts in a loss to Wellesley College.

Men’s Fencing

Ian Quin  —  Brandeis University  —  Ramsey, NJ (Ramsey)

Senior Ian Quin finished 5-1 in the foil against varsity opponents at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University. He finished 3-0 in the Judges’ loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and won two of three bouts in a win over Sacred Heart University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Tiffany Tseng  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Westford, MA (Westford Academy)

Carnegie Mellon University first-year swimmer Tiffany Tseng broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke and also won the 100-yard freestyle in the Tartans’ 163-99 home win over Washington and Lee University. Her winning time in the backstroke was 57.33 seconds and she captured the freestyle in 53.18 seconds.

Maddie Mianzo  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Maddie Mianzo earned her first NCAA Division III regional diving qualifying mark of the season on both the one- and three-meter boards in the Tartans’ dual meet win over Washington and Lee University. She placed first in the one-meter event (278.25 points) and finished second on the three-meter board (282.38 points).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Justin Britton  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Falls Church, VA (George Mason)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Justin Britton posted season-best times in the UAA in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events as the Tartans defeated visiting Washington and Lee University, 178-79. His time of 49.81 seconds in the 100 backstroke ranks second in NCAA Division III this season and provisionally qualified him for the NCAA championship. Britton, whose 200 backstroke time of 1:51.95 ranks fifth nationally, also swam on the Tartans’ 200-yard freestyle relay that broke the pool record with a time of 1:23.83.

Judson Kyle  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Austin, TX (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Judson Kyle qualified for the NCAA regional diving meet for the second time this season. His winning score of 329.70 on the one-meter board met the qualifying mark in the Tartans’ 178-79 home win over Washington and Lee University. Kyle placed second in the three-meter dive with a score of 322.73 points.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
