Athletes of the Week for December 3, 2018
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Caroline Dempsey — Washington University — Lincolnshire, IL (Adlai E. Stevenson)
Senior midfielder Caroline Dempsey and the Washington University defense limited Middlebury College to a season-low three shots and one corner kick in the Bears’ 1-0 loss in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship semifinal.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Aidan Miller — University of Rochester — Pearl River, NY (Pearl River)
University of Rochester junior forward Aidan Miller scored the lone Yellowjackets’ goal in a 3-1 loss to second-ranked and undefeated Tufts University in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. He also nearly picked up an assist in the closing seconds, dishing to teammate Zach Lawlor, whose point-blank shot was saved by the Jumbos’ goalkeeper.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Will Eisold — University of Rochester — Pipersville, PA (Central Bucks East)
University of Rochester freshman defender Will Eisold made several strong defensive plays in the Yellowjackets’ 3-1 setback to eventual national champion Tufts University in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals. He broke up a 2-on-2 break in the 15th minute of a scoreless match and then made a team save, clearing a Jumbos’ shot off the line in the 81st minute.
Women’s Basketball
Camila Casanueva — Brandeis University — Santa Barbara, CA (Dos Pueblos)
Brandeis University sophomore guard averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game to lead the Judges to a 2-0 week. She shot 63.6 percent from three-point range (7-for-11), 56.5 percent from the field (13-of-23), and 93.3 percent (14-for-15) from the free throw line. Casanueva totaled 30 points, eight boards, and six steals in the Judges’ 74-61 win at Salem State University, and followed that with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in a 77-60 victory over Johnson & Wales University.
Men’s Basketball
Corey Sherman — Brandeis University — Penn Valley, PA (Lower Merion)
Brandeis University senior guard Corey Sherman claimed Most Valuable Player honors at the New England Big Four Challenge after averaging 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 66.7 percent from the field (16-for-24), 50.0 percent (4-for-8) from three-point range, and 92,9 percent from the line (13-of-14). Sherman scored 24 points, hitting eight of 11 field goals, in the Judges’ 77-69 win over Salem State University and then helped the Judges win their first Big Four title since 2012 with 25 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a 74-49 win over Babson College.
Women’s Fencing
Sarah Prilutsky — NYU — Princeton, NJ (Princeton Day School)
NYU first-year foilist Sarah Prilutsky posted a 10-7 record at The Tradition Tournament, hosted by Sacred Heart University on Sunday.
Men’s Fencing
Ian Quin — Brandeis University — Ramsey, NJ (Ramsey)
Junior Ian Quin finished 9-3 in the foil to lead Brandeis University to a 2-3 weekend at its home invitational. He posted 3-0 records against St. John’s University, University of the Incarnate Word, and University of North Carolina. The Judges earned wins over Cornell University and Incarnate Word.
Sam Bekker — NYU — Brooklyn, NY (MIdwood)
Sophomore Sam Bekker earned double-digit wins to help NYU to a 3-3 record at The Tradition Tournament, hosted by Sacred Heart University on Sunday. He finished with a 13-4 record in the epee.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Fiona Muir — Emory University — Great Falls, VA (Langley)
Senior Fiona Muir provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships while winning three individual events at the Denison University Invitational. She swam the fastest times in Division III this season in the 100- (49.50 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:48.51) events, and the second-fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle (22.98 seconds). Muir swam the anchor leg of the Eagles’ winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.90) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:24.92).
Nina Fink — NYU — Orlando, FL (Windermere Prep)
First-year diver Nina Fink met the NCAA Division III diving qualifying standard on both boards at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational. She placed second in the three-meter dive (453.8) and third in the one-meter event (441.85).
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Zach Lorson — Emory University — Columbia, MO (Rock Bridge)
Freshman Zach Lorson broke the Emory University record in the 400-yard individual medley and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in that event and three others at the Denison University Invitational. He won the 400 IM in 3:51.86 and posted NCAA “B” times in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.69), 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.76), and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:33.55).
Gabe Bamforth — Carnegie Mellon University — Cambridge, MA (Cambridge Rindge & Latin School)
Senior Gabe Bamforth finished first on the one-meter board and second on the three-meter board at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational. He won the one-meter event with a score of 482.70 and his score of 524.95 on the three-meter board was 2.95 points off the first-place score by freshman teammate Judson Kyle.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
Ariana Newhouse — Emory University — Indianapolis, IN (Perry Meridian)
Emory University senior Ariana Newhouse returned to competition after missing nearly her entire junior season by posting a pair of top-four NCAA Division III finishes in the opening weekend of the indoor season at the Birmingham Southern College Icebreaker. She posted the top non-Division I time in the 400-meter dash (58.86 seconds) and the second-best Division III finish in the 200 meters (25.80). Newhouse ranks third in the nation in the 200 and fourth in the 400.
Eka Jose — Washington University — Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)
Washington University sophomore Eka Jose broke the triple jump program record that stood since 2003 at the Titan First Chance Meet in Bloomington, Illinois. Her distance of 12.29 meters bettered her nearest competitor by nearly three-quarters of a meter in the event that included NCAA Division I athletes and shattered the Bears’ previous record of 11.95 meters. In addition to posting the top Division III mark of the weekend in that event, she recorded the second-best long jump distance with a jump of 5.68 meters.
Men’s Indoor Track and Field
John Harry Wagner — Washington University — St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)
Sophomore John Harry Wagner won the 600-meter run and ran on the Washington University 1,600-meter relay team that posted the fastest NCAA Division III time of the weekend at the Titan First Chance Meet in Bloomington, Illinois. He finished more than a second ahead of the runner-up with a time of 1:22.03 in the 600 and helped the relay post a time of 3:23.62.
Dominic Oddo — Case Western Reserve University — Mentor, OH (Mentor)
Junior Dominic Oddo won the long jump to lead Case Western Reserve University to the team title at the Spartan Holiday Classic. His leap of 6.89 meters ranks eighth in NCAA Division III after the opening weekend of competition. Oddo added a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.74 seconds.
Wrestling
Jack La Corte — NYU — Monmouth Beach, NJ (Christian Brothers Academy)
NYU junior Jack La Corte won the 197-pound title at the University of Southern Maine Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday. He finished 4-0, earning a pair of victories by fall, and edging a returning NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship qualifier, 3-2 in the championship match.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
