Athletes of the Week for January 23, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Lisa Murphy  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  McLean, VA (McLean)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Lisa Murphy became the first women’s basketball player in the 30-year history of the University Athletic Association to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She became the 18th player in women’s NCAA Division III history to reach that milestone and also grabbed her 200th career block to become the eighth player in Division III history with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 200 blocks. Murphy reached all three milestones in the team’s 93-73 win over Emory University on Sunday when she broke the UAA single-game record with 44 points, hitting 15 of 16 field goals and making 14 of 16 free throws. She totaled 26 points, 13 boards, and five blocks in a key Tartan victory over 23rd-ranked University of Rochester on Friday. For the weekend, Murphy averaged 35.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks, while shooting 83.3 percent from the floor (20-for-24) and 90.9 percent from the line (30-of-33).

Men’s Basketball

Adam Gigax  —  Emory University  —  Mason, OH (Moeller)

Emory University junior guard Adam Gigax averaged 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles to UAA road wins over Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University. He shot 50 percent from the floor (16-for-32), 40 percent from three-point range (6-of-15), and made nine of 10 free throws. Gigax hit five 3-pointers and scored 31 points, including 20 in the second half, in the Eagles’ 91-81 victory over the Spartans on Friday. He followed that with 16 points in a 93-77 win over the Tartans on Sunday.

Women’s Fencing

Oliwia Szumilo  —  NYU  —  Staten Island, NY (College of Staten Island HS)

First-year fencer Oliwia Szumilo of NYU finished 20-6 in the sabre as the Violets won six of nine matches over the weekend. She led the team with 15 wins to lead NYU to five wins in six matches on Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by University of Pennsylvania. Szumilo finished 5-4 on Sunday at Columbia University against three teams, including third-ranked University of Notre Dame and 10th-ranked St. John’s University.

Men’s Fencing

Hans Engel  —  NYU  —  Seattle, WA (University Preparatory Academy)

Junior Hans Engel produced a 15-4 record in the epee as NYU finished 5-3 over the weekend. He posted a 9-1 mark on Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by University of Pennsylvania. Engel recorded five more wins on Sunday at Columbia University, finishing 5-3 against three teams, including fourth-ranked University of Notre Dame and eight-ranked St. John’s University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Annelise Kowalsky  —   Emory University  —  Excelsior, MN (International School of Minnesota)

Emory University senior Annelise Kowalsky won both breaststroke events and swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay as the Eagles defeated NCAA Division II Delta State University and University of West Florida on Senior Day. She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with times of 1:04.50 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:20.75 in the 200-yard breaststroke.  The Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay surpassed the NCAA qualifying mark with a time of 1:44.91.

Danielle Neu  —  University of Rochester  —  Hammondsport, NY (Haverling)

University of Rochester senior Danielle Neu won three events and finished second in another within a 24-hour span. On Friday in an 11-dive meet, she placed first on the three-meter board (447.50) and second in the one-meter dive (432.60). She swept the events against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, capturing first in  the one- (247.72) and three-meter (257.17) events.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Sage Ono  —  Emory University  —  Johns Creek, GA (Centennial)

Emory University freshman Sage Ono swept the backstroke events and swam on the victorious 200-yard medley relay as the Eagles defeated NCAA Division II Delta State University on Senior Day. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a time of 50.00 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and recorded a time of 1:51.50 in the 200-yard backstroke. Ono teamed with Andrew Wilson, Cooper Tollen, and Oliver Smith to provisionally qualify for the NCAA championship with a time of 1:30.67 in the 200-yard medley relay.

Connor Brisson  —  NYU  —  Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)

NYU sophomore Connor Brisson swept the diving competition in the Violets’ final dual meet of the season against United States Merchant Marine Academy. He won the three-meter dive by nearly 100 points with a score of 357.90 on the three-meter board and captured the one-meter event with a score of 336.60.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Annelise Wagner  —  Washington University  —  Webster Groves, MO (John Burroughs)

Junior Annalise Wagner ran the fastest 800-meter time and ran on the fastest 1,600-meter relay squad in NCAA Division III this season as Washington University defeated 10th-ranked University of Chicago and Illinois Wesleyan University at the I-55 Triangular. She won the 800 in a time of 2:16.15, and joined Daise Ogede, Rebecca Ridderhoff, and Kelli Hancock to finish first in the 1,600-yard relay in 3:55.58.

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Sophomore Heidi Nassos recorded two of the top performances in NCAA Division III this season to lead Washington University past 10th-ranked University of Chicago and Illinois Wesleyan University at the I-55 Triangular. She finished first in the pole vault (3.50 meters) and triple jump (11.28 meters). Nassos ranks ninth in NCAA Division III in the triple jump and 12th in the pole vault.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Caleb Su  —  NYU  —  Chula Vista, CA (Bonita Vista)

Senior Caleb Su broke the NYU record in the 60-meter dash in the preliminaries at Saturday’s SPIRE Invitational, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Geneva, Ohio. His time of 6.90 seconds is the top mark in the UAA this season and ranks sixth in NCAA Division III.

Jacob Schofel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Livingston, NJ (Livingston)

Junior Jacob Schofel of Carnegie Mellon University recorded a career-best throw of 16.19 meters in the weight throw to win the event at the SPIRE Invitational hosted by the Tartans at SPIRE Institute in Ohio. His distance is the top performance in the UAA this season. The Tartans won the 12-team event.

Wrestling

Santino Pelusi  —  NYU  —  Norristown, PA (La Salle College HS)

Sophomore Santino Pelusi earned a pair of key wins as NYU defeated The College of New Jersey for the first time in program history and handed University of Scranton its first defeat of the season. He won 4-2 in overtime to start the match against TCNJ and decisioned his Scranton opponent 5-4. NYU edged TCNJ 21-17, and topped Scranton 25-15.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
