Athletes of the Week for February 27, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Lisa Murphy  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  McLean, VA (McLean)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Lisa Murphy scored 34 points and set a UAA single-game record with 24 rebounds to lead the Tartans to a 72-65 comeback win over host Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. She shot 86.7 percent from the field (13-of-15) and 80.0 percent from the free throw line
(8-for-10), while setting another UAA single-game mark with 12 offensive boards. Murphy scored 12 fourth quarter points to spark the Tartans’ rally.

Men’s Basketball

Jack Serbin  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Albany, OH (New Albany)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Jack Serbin recorded his UAA-leading 16th double-double of the season with game-highs of 28 points and 19 rebounds in the Tartans’ 79-69 win at Case Western Reserve University. He shot 60.0 percent from the floor (12-for-20) and his 16 defensive rebounds were one shy of the UAA single-game record.

Women’s Fencing

Stephanie Cunningham  —  NYU  —  St. Louis, MO (Ladue Horton Watkins)

Junior Stephanie Cunningham finished 3-0 in the epee as NYU fell 17-10 to Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday. She raised her season win total to 24.

Men’s Fencing

Hans Engel  —  NYU  —  Seattle, WA (University Prep)

Junior Hans Engel won all three of his epee bouts to lead NYU to a 20-7 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday. He improved his season record to 35-12.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Carmen White  —  NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

First-year diver Carmen White of NYU qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the NCAA Division III Region 3 Diving Championships. She placed second in the three-meter competition (491.10) and fourth on the one-meter board (446.35). 

Agnes Lo  —  University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

First-year diver Agnes Lo of University of Chicago qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the NCAA Diving Regional hosted by Calvin College. She placed third on both the one- (418.25) and three-meter (461.10) competitions.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Connor Brisson  —  NYU  —  Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)

Sophomore diver Connor Brisson of NYU swept both boards at the NCAA Division III Region 3 Championships to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. He scored 598.60 to finish nearly 60 points ahead of the nearest finisher on the three-meter board. Brisson scored 564.60 to place first on the one-meter board.

Wrestling

Blaise Benderoth  —  NYU  —  Stony Point,  NY (North Rockland)

NYU freshman Blaise Benderoth finished 4-0 to earn the individual title at 184 pounds at the NCAA Division II East Region Championships. He improved his season record to 16-1 to become one of four NYU grapplers to qualify for the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

Baseball

Ben Browdy  —  Washington University  —  Deerfield, IL (Deerfield)

Senior second baseman Ben Browdy batted .538 (7-for-13) with seven runs batted in and three runs scored as Washington University opened the season 1-2. He recorded at least one double and one RBI in each contest and posted an .846 slugging percentage. Browdy finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI in the Bears’ 17-9 victory over North Park University.

Brad Margolin  —  Washington University  —  Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North)

Senior right-hander Brad Margolin threw seven shutout innings in a 17-9 Washington University victory over North Park University. He yielded just three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Billy Dimlow  —  Emory University  —  Sammamish, WA (Eastside Catholic)

Sophomore Billy Dimlow struck out 10 batters over eight innings and recorded his second win of the season in the Eagles’ 5-1 win over Huntingdon College. He allowed one unearned run and scattered seven hits with one walk.

Softball

Cassie Baca  —  Emory University  —  South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

Emory University sophomore shortstop Cassie Baca hit .571 (8-for-14) with four runs scored and four runs batted in to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 record at the William Peace University Triangle Classic. She finished 3-for-3 with one RBI in a 4-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University. Bacca hit a three-run home run to highlight a seven run second inning in a 8-1 triumph over Piedmont College.

Scottie Todd  —  Brandeis University  —  Tampa, FL (Strawberry Crest)

Brandeis University pitcher Scottie Todd allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings, posting a 2-0 record and 0.67 earned run average to begin her collegiate career. In her debut, she earned the win in a 3-1 Judges’ victory over NAIA Middle Georgia College, scattering eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Todd tossed a complete game two-hitter with six strikeouts as Brandeis edged York College of Pennsylvania 2-1.

Women’s Tennis

Rebecca Ho  —  Washington University  —  Santa Clarita, CA (Golden Valley)

Senior Rebecca Ho recorded a combined 5-1 mark as Washington University won two of three matches in Texas. She won all three of her matches at first singles, including a pair of straight-set victories over opponents ranked in the top-30. Ho teamed with senior Kaylan Griffith to post a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Adrien Bouchet  —  Emory University  —  Oakton, VA (Oakton)

Sophomore Adrien Bouchet won all three matches at third singles in straight sets and added two doubles wins at No. 2 doubles to help lead Emory University to a repeat title at the ITA Division III Men’s National Indoor Championships. He and freshman Max Renke earned the Eagles’ only doubles point against Trinity University and his 6-2, 6-2 win in singles gave Emory the lead for good. Bouchet’s win over Kenny Zheng evened the Eagles’ match with UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University, which Emory eventually won 5-4. He finished the weekend with two more points in a 5-1 Eagles’ title win over University of Chicago in a rematch of last year’s final. Bouchet’s singles opponents did not drop any of their other matches.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
