Athletes of the Week for March 13, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Zoe Vernon  —  Washington University  —  Chapel Hill, NC (Carolina Friends)

Washington University senior forward Zoe Vernon totaled 24 points and shot 66.7 percent from three-point range in two games at the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship sectionals in St. Louis. She contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the Bears’ 68-56 win over 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Vernon finished her career with 10 points in a 57-43 loss to fourth-ranked Tufts University.

Men’s Basketball

Zack Ayers  —  University of Rochester  —  Rochester, NY (McQuaid Jesuit)

University of Rochester senior forward Zack Ayers averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games at the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinals at Marietta College. He netted 13 points with three 3-pointers and four assists in the Yellowjackets’ 85-80 victory over the seventh-ranked host on Friday. Ayers finished his career with career-highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds in a 91-87 loss to top-ranked and undefeated Whitman College.

Women’s Fencing

Anastasiya Muravyeva  —  NYU  —  Fair Lawn, NJ (Fair Lawn)

Sophomore Anastasia Muravyeva of NYU placed eighth in the foil at the NCAA Northeast Regionals in New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday. She reached the final round and posted five total victories, qualifying her for the NCAA Fencing Championships.

Men’s Fencing

Grant Williams  —  NYU  —  Atlanta, GA (The Galloway School)

Sophomore Grant Williams of NYU finished fourth in the sabre at the NCAA Northeast Regionals in New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday. He reached the final round and posted seven total victories, qualifying him for the NCAA Fencing Championships.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Daisy Ogede  —  Washington University  —  Richton Park, IL (Western Reserve Academy)

Washington University senior Daisy Ogede earned two individual All-America honors and ran on a runner-up relay to help lead the Bears to the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships title. She placed second in the 60-meter dash with a program record time of 7.56 seconds, the ninth-fastest time in NCAA Division III history. Ogede finished third in the 200-meter dash (24.97 seconds) and ran on the second-place 1,600-meter relay (3:49.36).

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Deko Ricketts  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Barstow School)

Washington University senior Deko Ricketts won the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships. He made a late charge in the final 150 meters to overtake the leader and take the national title in 1:51.07.

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Washington University senior Everett Kleven tied for seventh place in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships. His height of 4.90 meters earned him All-America honors.

Wrestling

Nathan Pike  —  NYU  —  West Covina, CA (Diamond Bar)

Senior Nathan Pike became the first national champion in NYU program history at the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. He won all four of his matches at 133 pounds, recording a win by fall in the second period of the championship final.

Baseball

Brian Hernandez  —  Emory University  —  Miami, FL (G. Holmes Braddock)

Senior Brian Hernandez batted .438 (7-for-16) with seven runs scored and five runs batted in during a 3-1 week for Emory University. He recorded a hit and run scored in all four contests, while driving in a run in three games. Hernandez finished 4-for-4 with two runs batted in as the Eagles topped Piedmont College 5-0 on Saturday.

Billy Dimlow  —  Emory University  —  Sammamish, WA (Eastside Catholic)

Sophomore pitcher Billy Dimlow of Emory University shut down the Piedmont College offense for seven scoreless innings to record his third win of the season on Saturday, a 5-0 Eagles’ victory. He scattered six hits and three walks, while striking out 11 batters, marking the third time in five starts he has recorded double-digit strikeouts.

Women’s Golf

Patty Treevichaphan  —  NYU  —  Bangkok, Thailand (International School of Bangkok)

Sophomore Patty Treevichaphan earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the 2017 UAA Women’s Golf Championship leading NYU to its second consecutive Association title. She shot a 159 total, including a tournament-best 75 in difficult conditions on Sunday.

Men’s Golf

George Qian  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Bettendorf, IA (Montverde Academy)

Carnegie Mellon senior George Qian garnered Tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the 2017 UAA Men’s Golf Championship, leading the Tartans to a runner-up finish. He defeated Jason Paek of University of Rochester, 4&3, in the semifinal before defeating 2016 UAA Most Valuable Player Stefano Butti of Emory University, 2-up in the final.

Women’s Tennis

Sabrina Ross Neergaard  —  Brandeis University  —  Port Orchard, WA (Laurel Springs)

Sabrina Ross Neergaard of Brandeis University finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in wins over St. Lawrence University and UAA foe NYU. She teamed with Olivia Leavitt for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles and earned a pair of victories at first singles in the Judges’ 9-0 win over the Saints and a narrow 5-4 victory over the Violets.

Men’s Tennis

Michael Li  —  NYU  —  Clarksville, MD (Laurel Springs)

Freshman Michael Li won all four his matches in singles and doubles as NYU topped UAA rival Brandeis University and Colby College. He teamed with Benedict Teoh for wins at second doubles in both matches. Li earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles in the 6-3 NYU win over the Judges, and followed that with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles in the 5-4 Violets’ win over the Mules.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
