Athletes of the Week for April 3, 2017

Baseball

Eric Eldred  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Tecumseh, MI (Tecumseh)

Case Western Reserve University senior catcher Eric Eldred batted .538 (7-for-13) with three runs scored, a home run, and six runs batted in. He posted a .769 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage, while not allowing a stolen base in 35 innings behind the plate. Eldred finished 4-for-7 in the Spartans’ doubleheader sweep on Saturday and added three hits in six at-bats in another sweep on Sunday.

Jake Shields  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Hamilton, OH (Ross Senior)

Case Western Reserve University senior Jake Shields needed just 97 pitches to throw a three-hit shutout in the Spartans’ 8-0 win over visiting Brandeis University in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He walked two and struck out a career-high 12 batters, allowing just two runners past second base in the game. The win marked Shields’ 20th career victory.

Brad Margolin  —  Washington University  —  Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North)

Washington University senior Brad Margolin tossed a one-hit shutout as the Bears defeated 10th-ranked Emory University in the first game of a four-game series on Friday. He walked one and fanned nine hitters to outduel previously undefeated Billy Dimlow. Margolin improved to 4-0 this season.

Men’s Golf

George Qian  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Bettendorf, IA (Montverde Academy)

Senior George Qian averaged 71.0 over three rounds, including two under-par rounds to lead Carnegie Mellon University to the team title at its own Tartans Spring Invitational and a third-place finish at the 13-team Wynlakes Intercollegiate.  He placed second with a two-round score of 137, which broke the school record for 36 holes, at Wynlakes with his opening round 67 tying the program’s single round record. Qian followed with a 76 in the wet and cold conditions to tie for second individually in the Tartans’ home tournament, which they won for the second consecutive season.

Softball

Amy Wray  —  Emory University  —  Austin, TX (Forest Ridge, WA)

Senior outfielder Amy Wray batted .421 (8-for-19) with five runs scored and four runs batted in during a 4-2 week for the Eagles. She collected four doubles, a triple, and posted a team-high .737 slugging percentage. Wray, who hit safely in all six contests, hit .400 (6-for-15) with two runs scored and all four of her week’s RBI against Washington University.

Taylor Arends  —  Washington University  —  River Forest, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)

Sophomore infielder Taylor Arends batted .429 (6-of-14) with three runs scored and three runs batted in as Washington University split four games at Emory University. She hit safely in all four contests and registered two multi-hit contests. Arends finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a triple, and two RBI in an 8-0 Bears’ win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Anna McKee  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Visitation Academy)

Junior Anna McKee posted a 2-1 record with a 3.20 earned run average in 19.2 innings as Washington University split a four-game series at Emory University. She tossed a six-hit complete game shutout in an 8-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday before earning the victory in relief in the second game, a 10-8 Bears’ win in eight innings.

Women’s Tennis

Alex Wolkoff  —  University of Rochester —  Wilmette, IL (New Tier)

Junior Alex Wolkoff finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in University of Rochester road wins over 37th-ranked Oberlin College and John Carroll University. She teamed with Abbey Reinhart to win a pair of matches at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Wolkoff recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win at third singles in the Yellowjackets’ 7-2 victory at Oberlin, and posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles in a 5-4 victory over John Carroll.

Men’s Tennis

Josh Goodman  —  Emory University  —  Weston, FL (American Heritage School)

Senior Josh Goodman of Emory University picked up three wins at sixth singles against three of the top teams in NCAA Division III. He did not drop a set in garnering victories over opponents from second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, fourth-ranked Middlebury College, and 15th-ranked Trinity University. The Eagles recorded a 7-2 win over CMS and a 6-3 victory over host Trinity, while falling to Middlebury.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Rebecca Ridderhoff  —  Washington University  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Washington University senior Rebecca Ridderhoff ran the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 400-meter hurdles as the Bears dominated their own invitational. Her time of 1:00.47 is 32 seconds faster than the next best time in the nation this season. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with the nation’s fifth-fastest time (she previously ranked third in the event) of 14.65 seconds, and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team with the fourth-fastest time in Division III in 3:52.33.

Nyla Lindo  —  Emory University  —  Plantation, FL (Pine Crest School)

Emory University first-year competitor Nyla Lindo climbed to first in the UAA and 15th in NCAA Division III this season in the triple jump at the High Point University VertKlasse Meeting. She finished 11th overall in the event and was the top Division III finisher with her mark of 11.20 meters. She also competed in the long jump (4.84 meters) and high jump (1.43 meters).

Mary Martin  —  University of Chicago  —  Enfield, England (Haberdashers Askes School for Girls)

University of Chicago first-year competitor Mary Martin won two individual events and ran on a winning relay to lead the Maroons to the team title at the Ted Haydon Invitational. She won the 100-meter dash (12.72 seconds) and recorded the 15th-best long jump (5.47 meters) in NCAA Division III this season. Martin ran on the 400-meter relay (49.02 seconds) than ran the 18th-fastest time in the nation this season.

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University sophomore Heidi Nassos won the pole vault as the Bears cruised to the team title at their own invitational. Her height of 3.60 meters ranks 15th in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Deko Ricketts  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Barstow School)

Senior Deko Ricketts ran to a Francis Field record in the 800-meter run to help lead Washington University to the team title at its own invitational. His winning time of 1:49.61 ranks second in NCAA Division III this season. Ricketts also anchored the first-place 1,600-meter relay, which recorded the nation’s third-fastest time of the year in 3:17.78.

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Senior Everett Kleven of Washington University finished second in the pole vault to the nation’s leading pole vaulter as the Bears captured the title at their own invitational. He recorded a height of 5.05 meters, which ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.
