Athletes of the Week for April 10, 2017

Baseball

Jeff Ronpirin  —  Emory University  —  Lilburn, GA (Parkview)

Senior Jeff Ronpirin batted .500 (6-for-12) with four extra-base hits to lead Emory University to a four-game sweep of Brandeis University at University of Massachusetts-Boston. He recorded two doubles, two triples, and scored five runs.

Jackson Weeg  —  Emory University  —  Woodstock, GA (River Ridge)

Senior pitcher Jackson Weeg threw a seven-inning complete game shutout as Emory University blanked Brandeis University, 6-0, in the opener of a four-game series at University of Massachusetts-Boston. He allowed just three hits, all singles, and struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Washington University first-year golfer Samantha Haubenstock earned all-tournament honors at the Washington University Spring Invitational, which featured seven teams ranked in the top-25 by Golfstat. She tied for fourth place with a two-day total of 150 (74-76) and tied for the tournament lead with six birdies over the two days.

Men’s Golf

Connor Yakubov  —  Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (St. Charles Prep)

Emory University sophomore Connor Yakubov placed fifth and earned all-tournament honors in the 87-player field at the Discover DeKalb Emory University Spring Invitational. He tied the program’s second-best 18-hole score in program history with a final round 67, three-under par. Yakubov’s two-round total of 140 tied him for third on the school’s all-time chart for 36 holes. The Eagles finished second, just one shot behind top-ranked Huntingdon College, in the 15-team field.

Softball

Grace Tritchler  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  San Antonio, TX (Winston Churchill)

Case Western Reserve University junior Grace Tritchler batted .500 (9-for-18) with three home runs and 11 runs batted in during a 5-1 week for the Spartans. She hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the Spartans’ 4-3 win over NYU in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Tritchler also hit .500 (6-for-12) as CWRU took three of four games from the Violets to move to 5-4 in UAA play, joining Brandeis University as the only teams with winning records in Association games.

Brittany File  —  Emory University  —  Carmel, CA (Carmel)

Emory University senior pitcher Brittany File became the program’s all-time wins leader after tossing back-to-back shutouts against Brandeis University on Saturday. Her five-inning, three-hit performance in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday gave her 74 career wins. In 13.1 innings over three appearances, she did not allow a run and yielded only four hits while striking out 21 batters.

Molly Moran  —  University of Chicago  —  Wheaton, IL (Benet Academy)

University of Chicago junior pitcher Molly Moran allowed just one unearned run in 12 innings of work, registering a win and a save as the Maroons took three of four games from Washington University. She threw two innings of hitless relief to earn the save in a 3-1 Maroons’ victory in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. She followed that with a four-hit complete game, allowing one unearned run, no walks, and striking out seven.

Women’s Tennis

Rebecca Ho  —  Washington University  —  Santa Clarita, CA (Golden Valley)

Senior Rebecca Ho recorded a combined 6-0 mark to lead Washington University to a runner-up finish at the Midwest Invitational. She won all three of her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets and teamed with classmate Kaylan Griffith for three victories at first doubles. Ho improved to 41-9 in singles and doubles this season.

Men’s Tennis

Kenny Zheng  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pennington, NJ (Hopewell Valley Central)

Senior Kenny Zheng earned two of the seventh-ranked Tartans’ points in a 5-4 win over 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday. He paired with freshman Michael Rozenvasser to win 8-5 at No. 3 doubles and then came back to win the clinching match at fourth singles, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 6-3 with the match tied 4-4.

Bernardo Neves  —  Washington University  —  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Colégio pH)

Freshman Bernardo Neves recorded a combined four singles and doubles victories as sixth-ranked Washington University posted wins over Millikin University and NCAA Division II 20th-ranked Southwest Baptist University. With wins at third and fourth singles as well as doubles victories at No. 2 and No. 3 with sophomore Radha Vishnubhotla, Neves reached 30 wins in his rookie campaign.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Rebecca Ridderhoff  —  Washington University  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Senior Rebecca Ridderhoff recorded the 10th-best time in NCAA Division III history in the 400-meter hurdles at the Saint Louis University Invitational. She won the event with a time of 59.38 seconds, the top time in Division III this season. Ridderhoff also ran on the Bears’ winning 1,600-meter relay (3:48.78) and 400-meter relay (48.72 seconds).

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Sophomore Heidi Nassos won two events to help lead Washington University to the team title at the Saint Louis University Invitational. Her distance of 3.75 meters in the pole vault ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season. Nassos also won the triple jump with a leap of 10.94 meters.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  —  Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University freshman Nick Matteucci placed second in the 1,500-meter run at the predominantly NCAA Division I Saint Louis Invitational. His time of 3:52.07 ranks fourth in Division III this season. The Bears finished first in the eight-team meet.

Jacob Schofel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Livingston, NJ (Livingston)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Jacob Schofel won the hammer throw to help lead the Tartans to the team title in a field of 15 teams at the Westminster College Invitational. His mark of 52.86 meters would rank 25th in NCAA Division III this season (he is already ranked 20th). Schofel recorded a career-best throw of 44.13 meters in the discus.

Brandon Hutchison  —  Washington University  —  Troy, MO (Troy Buchanan)

Washington University freshman Brandon Hutchison cleared a season-best height of 4.70 meters in the pole vault at the Saint Louis Invitational. He placed second in the event and his height ranks 22nd in NCAA Division III this season. The Bears finished first in the mixed-division eight-team meet.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
