Wes Peacock Homers Twice as Emory Shuts Out Covenant 10-0

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University senior Wes Peacock hit his first two home runs of the season, and sophomore Jackson Weeg pitched eight shutout innings, as the Eagles cruised to a 10-0 win over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the seventh in the last eight games for the Eagles, and the team's 10th in its last 12 contests.  Emory improved to 23-11 overall, while Covenant dropped to 14-18 overall.

Weeg allowed just five hits and two walks during the outing, while striking out four batters and improving to 9-1 overall on the season.  The nine victories are tied for the most in Division III this season.

Freshman shortstop Nick Chambers drove in the first two runs of the game for Emory, the first on a two-out single in the top of the second that scored sophomore third baseman Philip Maldari, and the second on a one-out hit in the top of the fourth that again plated Maldari.  The Eagles added on three more runs in the frame, one on a groundout by sophomore catcher Chris Young, and the final two on a home run from Peacock to put Emory on top 5-0 after four.

The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, rallying with three-straight two out hits.  Maldari started the rally with a single, and scored when sophomore left fielder Wilson Morgan doubled in the next at bat.  Morgan later stole third, and came across the plate on an RBI single from senior right fielder Jordan Selbach, extending Emory's advantage to 7-0.

Peacock added onto the lead with his second two run home run of the game in the top of the eighth, giving Emory a 9-0 lead.  The Eagles capped off the scoring in the ninth inning, with junior Chris Slivka scoring the Eagles' 10th run of the game on a fielding error.

The two home runs from Peacock match an Emory single-game record, achieved 25 times previously.  Former Eagle Patrick Riebsame last accomplished the feat on April 9th, 2011, also at Covenant College.

Sophomore Kyle Monk closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, giving the Eagles their fourth eam shutout of the campaign.

Emory collected 10 hits in the game, including two apiece from Maldari, Peacock, Selbach and Chambers.

Alec Mitchell started and took the loss for the Scots, falling to 1-4 on the season.
