NYU Takes Series Finale Against Bard

NYU Takes Series Finale Against Bard

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team won the rubber-match of its three-game series against Bard College on Sunday, April 19, defeating the Raptors 7-4 on the road in Annondale-on-Hudson, NY.

After splitting Saturday's doubleheader against Bard (5-22) at MCU Park, NYU (15-19) was able to get a victory on Sunday to win the weekend series.

Michael Vokulich earned the win on the mound for the Violets, pitching career-high eight innings. The freshman earned his second victory of the week and improved his record to 4-1.

"Vokulich was impressive today," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "That may have been the best performance I have seen from a pitcher all year."

After Bard scored the first run of the contest, the Violets answered as Adrian Spitz hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to give NYU a 2-1 advantage.

Bard tied the game in the home half of the fifth, before an eighth inning RBI-single from Jonathan Iaoine gave NYU a lead it would never relinquish. Vokulich added an RBI in the inning, as well, to add to the Violets' lead.

NYU followed up its two-run eighth with three more in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a two-run double from CJ Picerni

Vokulich took the mound in the ninth looking to throw his second consecutive complete game, but ran into some trouble. The right-hander handed the ball to closer Matthew Millus who was able to get three quick outs and solidify the 7-4 series-clinching victory for the Violets.

Highlights:

- Vokulich struck out a career-high seven hitters, while walking just one.

- Picerni and Iaione each had a team-best two hits in the victory.

- Spitz led the squad with three RBIs.

- 10 different NYU batters recorded a hit in the win.

- Millus struck out one and did not allow an earned run in his inning of work to improve his team-best ERA to 1.23.

The victory conmpleted a successful week for the Violets, during which they also swept Cairn University and Yeshiva University on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

"Our hitters have done a good job of making adjustments late in games," added Kimbler. "If they keep it up, I don't see why we can't keep this streak going."
