Yellowjackets Push Win Streak To 11 With Sweep of Skidmore

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester baseball team pushed its win streak to 11 games after sweeping a Liberty League doubleheader over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.

Rochester (16-7, 9-1 Liberty League) took a tight game one 4-2 and then broke out the bats in a 13-3 win in game two.  Skidmore is still looking for its first league win on the year as the Thoroughbreds drop to 6-10 overall and 0-6 in the Liberty League.

In game one, the home Yellowjackets were able to get on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI groundout from Nolan Schultz.  He scored Sam Slutsky who singled and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Skidmore would tie the game in the top of the 3rd when Jeb Clarke lined a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Steven Gilbert who led off the inning with a double.

UR would answer back, regaining the lead in the bottom of the inning with two unearned runs of Skidmore starter Nick Petrella.  Slutsky led off reaching on an error.  After he stole second, Slutsky advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a foul sac fly to right from Schultz.  Lance Hamilton then followed with a single to center, stole second base and scored on a Brendan Garry single giving the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead.

The Thoroughbreds would get another run in the 6th, but struck some bad luck in the process, preventing them from tying the score.  Clarke doubled to start the inning.  Mike LaVita then singled through the right side putting runners on the corners.  After a strikeout, Matt Barra lined double to right field which would have scored LaVita from first had it not bounced over the fence for a ground rule hit.  With the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position, UR starter Evan Janifer got two huge strikeouts to end the threat, preserving a one run lead.

Rochester's Jake Meyerson would add insurance in the bottom of the inning when he scored on a wild pitch.

In the 7th inning, Janifer got a leadoff strikeout but then hit a batter and allowed a single to put the tying runs on base.  After a walk loaded the bases, freshman Luke Meyerson came to the mound looking for the save.  He would strike out LaVita and then get a fielders choice groundout to end the game, picking up his first career save.

Janifer went 6 1/3 innings for Rochester, winning his third straight start.  He scattered 9 hits, allowed 2 runs and 1 walk while striking out 7.  Petrella tossed a complete game for Skidmore, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs (2 earned) and 1 walk while striking out 6.

The home Yellowjackets were able to capitalize on Skidmore control issues in game two, seizing a 13-3 victory while drawing a UR single game record 15 walks.

UR would go ahead early, scoring four times in the 1st and once more in the 2nd inning.  Schultz provided the big hit, a 2-RBI triple in the 1st inning, his team leading 5th three-bagger of the season.

In the 4th inning, Rochester would bat around, scoring four more runs to build its lead to 9-0.  Hamilton would get a 2-RBI triple this time, with Jake Meyerson and Tyler Schmidt adding RBI base hits in the frame.

The Thoroughbreds would score two to get on the board in the top of the 6th inning, both runs coming due to two UR errors.  After a two-out walk from Nick Fronte, Daniel Dasgupta reached on an error and both were driven in when Josh Brown ripped a triple to deep center field.  Brown would finish 3-3 with 3 RBI and a walk as the lone bright spot for Skidmore in game two.

Rochester's Dan Warren was strong on the mound in game two, tossing 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 2 runs (0 earned) and 4 walks while striking out 6.  Ethan McGowan pitched two innings of relief, allowing an unearned run while striking out two.

For Rochester, Meyerson finished 4-5 with two RBI and a run in game two.  Schultz added a 2-5 game with a triple, 2 RBI and 2 runs.  Garry also had two hits and two runs while Schmidt finished with two batted in for UR.  DH Josh Ludwig would tie a Rochester record, drawing four walks in the game.
