Quick Starts Fuel Yellowjacket Doubleheader Sweep of St. Lawrence

Quick Starts Fuel Yellowjacket Doubleheader Sweep of St. Lawrence

From University of Rochester Athletics

Batting as the visiting team on its home field, the University of Rochester baseball team jumped out to 1st inning leads in both games, sweeping a doubleheader against St. Lawrence University on Friday afternoon at Towers Field.

Rochester (11-7, 5-1 Liberty League) scored four runs in the top of the first inning in game one and parlayed that into an 11-2 win before scoring three runs in the top of the first in game two, turning that start in a 7-2 win.  St. Lawrence drops to 8-6 overall and 4-5 in the Liberty League.

Friday's games were originally scheduled to be at St. Lawrence, but the harsh winter up north still has SLU's field unplayable, so the games were moved to UR's turf facility.

Starting off game one, UR's Brian Munoz walked with one out and that was followed by three consecutive triples by Nolan Schultz, Lance Hamilton and Brendan Garry to give UR a quick 3-0 lead.  Garry was then driven in by a Steve Eychner infield single.

St. Lawrence looked to get back into in in the 2nd inning, but with the bases loaded and one out, UR starter Dan Warren induced an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

In the 3rd, SLU would get a run on a Kyle MacDonald double to right, but the trailing running trying to score from first was thrown out at the plate on a nice relay by right fielder Jake Meyerson and 2nd basemen Eychner to end the inning.

The Saints again threatened in the 4th, but left the bases loaded after Warren struck out Kyle Liszewski.  Warren ended up going 5 innings, allowed 10 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.  Andrew Crean got the final six outs for UR.

In the fifth, SLU cut the lead to 4-2 after a solo home run to left center by Mark Syron.

Rochester would bust out the bats in the top of the sixth, answering with five runs to go ahead 9-2.  Meyerson tripled in two runs and Munoz added a sacrifice fly.  Schultz notched his 2nd RBI triple of the day and eventually scored on a SLU wild pitch.

The Yellowjackets would tack on two more runs in the 7th, one coming on a mammoth home run by Garry, his team leading 5th of the season, the other coming on a groundout by Meyerson.

Rochester's Schultz finished game one 3-3 with 2 triples, 2 runs and 2 RBI.  Garry was 2-4 with a triple and home run along with 2 runs and 2 RBI.  Meyerson added 3 RBI and Eychner finished 2-3 with a run and RBI.

St. Lawrence starter Sam Downes tossed 6 innings, gave up 10 hits and 9 runs while walking 2 and striking out 3.  Matt Phelan came in to pitch the 7th for the Saints.

In game two, UR again started strong.  After back to back singles, Schultz reached on a Saints error scoring a run.  Hamilton then reached via SLU error and after a hit by pitch, UR executed a double steal in a 1st and 3rd situation to get its third run.

St. Lawrence's Mic Regan provided an RBI single in the 2nd inning to get the Saints on the board.  But UR's Josh Schulman worked out of what could have been bigger trouble, leaving the bases jammed with Saints after striking out Liszewski looking.

The Yellowjackets would score single runs in each of the next three innings to boost the lead out to 6-1.  Tyler Schmidt produced a sac fly in the 3rd, Meyerson scored on a wild pitch in the 4th and Schmidt hit his first career home run in the 5th.

St. Lawrence's Syron would single in Chris Fernandez in the bottom of the 5th to make it 6-2 in favor of UR, but Rochester would get that run back in the 8th when Munoz cracked his team leading 8th double of the season.

On the mound, UR's Schulman went 5 innings, allowed 5 hits, 2 runs and 4 walks while striking out 4.  Michael Lee pitched three innings of scoreless relief and Grant Petito pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Yellowjackets.

At the plate in game two, Munoz was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, allowing him to reach safely in all 18 games so far this season.  Schmidt was 2-3 with 2 RBI and run and Meyerson was 2-3 with two runs.

For SLU, Alex Dermody took the loss going 4.1 innings allowing 5 hits, 6 runs (5 earned) and 5 walks.  Frank Grady finished off the game, tossing the remaining 4.2 innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 run.
