Win Streak Reaches Nine as Brandeis Downs Wentworth, 7-4, Under The Lights

From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis University baseball team extended their winning streak to nine games with a 7-4 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology tonight as the Judges played under the lights of Stein Diamond for the first time since 2009. Brandeis improves to 17-15-1 on the season, Wentworth falls to 10-21.

STREAKING JUDGES

  • The nine-game winning streak for Brandeis is their longest since the 2002 season, when they strung together 10 wins in a row between April 9 and April 24.
  • The Judges' 17 wins are their highest total since going 24-19 in 2011.
  • Brandeis improved to 9-1 on Stein Diamond under head coach Derek Carlson '91.
  • The Judges are 2-1 all-time under the lights at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth struck first when 2B Jake Smith plated 1B Johnny Ryan in the second inning.
  • Brandeis graduate student DH Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was involved in the next two runs, both of which came with two outs.
  •  Trenk scored on a senior CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon) single in the bottom of the third.
  • He drove in senior RF Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) by dropping a single down the left-field line in the fourth.
  •  Wentworth went ahead with three runs in the top of the fifth.
  • 3B Jordan Burst brought home two runs with a single to center, then made a heads-up play to advance all the way to third on the throw home.
  • Two batters later, SS Jimmy Temte singled to center to put the visitors ahead, 4-2.
  • The Judges tied things up at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • They loaded the bases on two walks and a perfectly-placed bunt by senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms).
  • Trenk followed with a sacrifice fly that advanced all three runners, and after a hit batter, junior SS Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) delivered a second sac fly.
  • After rookie reliever Daniel Schupper (Villanova, Pa./Harriton) retired the side in the top of the seventh, the Judges scored the three winning runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • With runners on second and third and one out, Doyle knocked in the winning runs with a double to deep centerfield.
  • Two batters later, senior Max Hart (Montville, Conn./Montville) followed suit with a two-bagger of his own to make it a 7-4 game.
  • Wentworth loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Healy came in from right field and ended the threat with a called third strike.
  • Healy retired the side with two more Ks in the ninth for his fifth save, tied for the third-most in a season in Brandeis history.
