NYU Tops St. Joseph's - Brooklyn

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Wednesday, April 6, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (10-13) recorded their sixth victory in seven games with a 13-0 result over the Bears (10-11).

Adrian Spitz scored from third on a Jonathan Iaione infield single in the first inning to put NYU ahead 1-0. In the following inning, Jack Walter, Christian Bloom and Jeremy Wayne scored on a Ryan McLaughlin scorcher down the third-base line to give the Violets a 4-0 advantage.

NYU posted another three runs in the bottom of the fourth. McLaughlin drove in Bloom with a double, before Spitz and Jake Smith recorded back-to-back RBI base hits.

Another five runs crossed the plate for the Violets in the fifth as the squad batted around. CJ Picerni capped the barrage by plating Smith with a single to make it 12-0.

Smith drove in Walter with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly to complete the scoring for NYU.

"For the most part, we swung at pitches we could handle and we barreled them up," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We hit ahead in the count for most of the day and that really helped."

Chad Johnstone (2-0) threw five innings of scoreless relief to record the win, striking out two and allowing two hits. Cameron Serapilio-Frank started and pitched the first frame. Jack Kurtenbach, Paul Gadaleta and Matthew Wells each tossed an inning to complete the shutout.

"Cam got hurt in the first inning," explained Kimbler. "Johnstone came in and gave us five strong innings of two-hit baseball, so hats off to him. That is what a good team looks for, filling in when those situations occur."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Spitz went 5-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs.

- McLaughlin was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs, a double, and reached base twice on hit-by-pitches.

- Walter went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, and four runs.

"Our 1-2-3 hitters (Walter, McLaughlin and Spitz) were 10-for-14," continued Kimbler. "When you have the top of the lineup doing that, good things are going to happen."

- Smith went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a hit-by-pitch and one run.

- Wayne and Bloom each scored two runs.
