Maroons Break Loose Early to Top St. Norbert 13-4

From University of Chicago Athletics

A five-run second inning propelled the University of Chicago baseball team ahead early and the home team did not look back, cruising to a 13-4 win on Saturday afternoon over St. Norbert College.

The win improved the Maroons to 16-15 while dropping the Green Knights to 19-14. St. Norbert was dealt just their fifth loss in the past 17 contests, as the two teams split the weekend series.

UChicago put 21 runners on base in the afternoon's tilt, scattering 14 hits and working seven walks. Sophomore first baseman Michael Davis led the unit with three hits and a walk. Freshman designated hitter Josh Parks (2 RBI), senior third basemen Tim Sonnefeldt (1 RBI) and junior shortstop Ryan Krob all posted two hits. Each of the nine batters in the starting lineup collected at least one hit. The top two hitters in the lineup – sophomore outfielder Max Larsen and freshman outfielder Connor Hickey – combined to reach base in 7-of-12 plate appearances with two hits, four walks and one hit-by-pitch.

The Maroons jumped on St. Norbert in the second inning to go ahead 5-0. A leadoff double by Parks was followed by three-consecutive singles. Sonnefeldt plated Parks with his base-knock to the opposite field, and two runs came in afterwards when the third baseman threw wildly on freshman second baseman Max Brzostowski's bunt single. A fielder's choice made it 4-0 and Davis singled to left field for an RBI as well.

St. Norbert drew close at 5-3 in the fourth inning, but UChicago had its answer in the bottom of the frame. Hickey walked, stole second base and reached third on a passed ball. Junior outfielder Nicholas Toomey singled to right center for the RBI. Later with the bases loaded, Parks jacked a two-run single of his own to make it 8-3.

The Maroons kept adding on with a trio of unearned runs in the sixth thanks to a pair of throwing errors. Larsen singled through the right side in the bottom of the eighth to score a run, and then scored himself one batter later on an errant relay throw to third base.

The Maroons split pitching duties between freshman Alex McGimpsey (4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 K, 2 BB) and junior Thomas Prescott (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 K, 1 BB). Prescott for his effort got the win in relief, improving to 2-0 on the campaign.
