From Washington University Athletics
The No. 14-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team had four student-athletes recognized with selections to the 2017 D3baseball.com All-Central Region Team while head coach Pat Bloom was honored with the Central Region Coach of the Year award. In addition, three Bears also earned American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Central Region honors.
All four Bears honored were senior members that helped lead the 2017 team to a 27-10 overall record, the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and an NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament berth. Starting pitcher Brad Margolin, shortstop Austin Darmawan, second baseman Ben Browdy and relief pitcher Jake Mintz were awarded All-Region Team honors.
Brad Margolin
Margolin was named to the D3baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region First Team after leading the Bears in victories with nine. The Northbrook, Ill.-native posted a 1.98 earned run average in 82 innings of work allowing just 56 hits and seven walks compared to 69 strikeouts. Margolin's career totals rank among the top-10 in WashU history: wins (23 – fourth), innings pitched (237 – sixth) and earned run average (2.39 – seventh). He had one stretch during the 2017 season in which he threw three consecutive complete game shutouts against UAA opponents 3-0 against then No. 10 Emory University on March 31, 1-0 at Case Western Reserve University on April 14 and 1-0 at Brandeis University on April 23. Margolin was named the UAA pitcher of the week six times on the year en route to earning UAA Co-Pitcher of the Year.
Austin Darmawan
Darmawan was named to the D3baseball.com All-Central Region First Team and ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region Third Team after batting .347 (52-for-150), with 32 runs, nine doubles, 19 RBIs, a .421 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases. He started in all 37 of WashU's games this season, and concluded his career with 203 hits, which ranks seventh in school history. Darmawan also ranks in WashU's top-10 in stolen bases (68 – fourth), runs scored (139 – seventh) and batting average (.366 – 10th). He was also stellar in the field, committing seven errors in 180 chances (.961 fielding percentage) while turning 16 double plays. Darmawan was awarded the UAA Hitter of the Week once this season while also being named to the all-UAA First Team.
Ben Browdy
Browdy started all 37 games and batted .372 with four homeruns and 33 RBIs. He led the team in batting average, hits (55), doubles (16) and homeruns while earning D3baseball.com All-Central Region Second Team honors and ABCA/Rawlings Third Team distinction. The Deerfield, Ill.-native concluded his career with the 10th most doubles in program history (37). Browdy set a WashU record this season with 37 game-hit streak from April 16, 2016 – April 2, 2017. He was named the UAA Hitter of the Week once and earned all-UAA First Team honors.
Jake Mintz
Mintz was named to the D3baseball.com All-Central Region Second Team after finishing the season with several career-highs including earned run average (0.87), innings pitched (31), wins (4), saves (4) and strikeouts (29). He also held opponents to a .140 batting average with 14 hits and 13 walks for a sub-1.00 WHIP (Walks+Hits per Inning Pitched). Mintz earned D3baseball.com National Team of the Week honors on April 4, and was also named to all-UAA Second Team.
