The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday against Emory University to wrap up its second of four University Athletic Association (UAA) series, beating the Eagles 11-7 in game one before falling 4-0 in game two at Chappell Park.
WashU concluded the weekend with a 15-12 overall record, including 4-4 in UAA play. Emory ended the week with a 13-14 overall record while evening its association record to 4-4.
Senior Auggie Mense had an explosive Sunday, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-8 at the plate with four runs, two RBIs, two walks and two stolen bases. Freshman Troy Bauer held the Eagles scoreless for 3.2 innings in game two to help keep the Bears within striking distance while classmate Tim Tague earned the victory in game one pitching 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Game 1: WashU 11 – Emory 7
The Bears offense steadily put pressure on the Eagles in game one, scoring runs in the opening five innings of play. Sophomore John Ostrander knocked in sophomore Evan Nagel in the first with a single. Mense plated freshman Johnny LaMantia with a grounder in the second inning.
Sophomore John Brinkman led off the third inning with a four pitch walk and scored two batters later on a triple by freshman Mitchell Black. After two consecutive scoreless innings Emory scored twice in the bottom of the third off of sophomore Matt Ashbaugh.
Two errors in the fourth inning helped WashU add another run to its lead. Mense had the only hit of the inning for the Bears and took advantage of two errors to score. Ashbaugh held Emory in check with a three-up, three-down fourth.
Back-to-back hit-by-pitches initiated a three-run top of the fifth for the Bears. Mense knocked in LaMantia with a single before Brinkman hit a bases loaded single to plate Mense and sophomore AJ Dunham for a 7-2 lead.
Tague entered in the fifth inning with two runners on base. Emory chipped away at the Bears lead and scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
WashU added a run in the seventh and three in the ninth. The extra run came in handy as the Eagles scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth.
Tague concluded the game with his third win of the season allowing four hits, three runs (two earned), three walks while striking out three in 4.1 innings pitched.
Mense led the Bears attack with a 3-for-6 performance, scoring four runs, knocking in two runs and swiping a bag. Brinkman, sophomore Thomas Gardner and Black each finished the game with multiple hits as Brinkman led the team with three RBIs.
Game 2: Emory 4 – WashU 0
The Bears were held to four hits in game two, while Emory scored twice in the first inning for what proved to be the difference.
Bauer entered the game in the fourth inning and held the Eagles to three hits in 3.2 innings pitched while striking out three. Freshman Jared Fong recorded two-outs in the bottom of the eighth to help keep the Bears deficit at four.
Mense, LaMantia, Black and sophomore Brian Schutter were the four Bears to reach base with hits in game two.
The Bears loaded the bases in back-to-back innings but were unable to capitalize as they did so both times with two outs.
