CWRU Defeats Mount Union, 6-2

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team won its third-straight game with a 6-2 win over the University of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The Spartans now stand at 13-11 overall, while the Purple Raiders, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25, dropped to 15-8 with the loss.

Graduate student southpaw Evan Faxon started and earned the win on Saturday to improve to 1-3 on the year. He allowed just two runs on three hits and three walks and struck out seven batters through five innings. Sophomore Jackson Brewer followed with a solid relief outing, throwing three scoreless innings with a hit and three walks while striking out a pair. Senior Sankalp Doshi pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win.

CWRU got off to a quick start in the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior catcher Jack Anderson walked to start the inning and first-year second baseman Jasiah Harris followed with a double to put a pair of runners into scoring position. With one out in the frame, a ground ball by junior third baseman Zack Carinci scored Anderson, putting CWRU in front 1-0. With two outs in the inning and the bases loaded, senior first baseman Nick Talarico doubled to centerfield, scoring all three runners and giving the Spartans a 4-0 advantage.

An RBI single by senior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie and a run-scoring double by Anderson in the third extended the Spartans' lead to 6-0. Mount Union scored a pair of runs in the fifth, but that would be all the Purple Raiders would get off the Spartan staff on Saturday, as CWRU held on for the win.

Anderson went two-for-four with a run scored, an RBI, and a double, extending his hitting streak to 20-straight games, while Carinci was one-for-four with a double, a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases, and has now hit safely in 15-straight games. Harris added a two-for-two day at the plate with a double, a run, and three walks.

CWRU drew 10 walks as a team and outhit Mount Union 9-5. The Spartans also turned a pair of double plays in the game.

Mount Union starter Anthony Warner suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year.
