CWRU Extends Winning Streak to Nine with 8-4 Win over Wooster

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University junior third baseman Zack Carinci extended his hitting streak to 26-straight games, sophomore outfielder Nick Harms belted his ninth home run of the season and junior southpaw Reece Marley pitched six strong innings, as the Spartans picked up their ninth-straight win with an 8-4 victory against the College of Wooster at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon.

CWRU has now won 13 of its last 14 games to improve to 23-12 overall on the season. Wooster fell to 13-18 following Wednesday's loss.

Harms went two-four-four with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, a triple, and a home run to match his career high with nine, tied for the second most in a single season in program history with Jake Ryan (2019) and Steve Rosiek (1986). It was the 18th home run of his career, moving him into a tie for the fourth-most ever by a Spartan player, and just four away from the program's all-time record.

Carinci added a two-for-five day at the plate to extend his hitting streak to 26 games, the second longest in program history behind only Sam Alexander's 28-game streak in 2011. Senior first baseman Nick Talarico finished the game two-for-four with a run and an RBI, and first-year second baseman Jasiah Harris drove in a pair on Wednesday.

Wooster scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead, but those would prove to be the only two runs allowed by Marley in his start. He went six innings in the game, surrendering just six hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters. Marley secured the victory in the game to improve to 6-2 on the season with a 3.41 ERA. His six wins are tied for the 11th-most in a season by a Spartan pitcher and just two away from the program single-season record.

The Spartans evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the second. Harms led the inning off with a home run to cut the lead in half, and a walk drawn by senior outfielder Trey Haley and a single from senior designated hitter RJ Christie put runners on the corners. Talarico followed with a single up the middle to score Haley and knot the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Carinci singled with one out and scored a batter later on a triple by Harms. A base hit by Haley played Harms and extended the CWRU lead to 4-2 after five frames. Talarico led the sixth off with a triple and scored on a double by sophomore outfielder Logan Andreyko. Later in the frame, first-year Harris drove in two more with a single and Christie drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Spartans' lead to 8-2.

Wooster cut into the Spartans' lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but first-year Archer Stankowski and junior Andrew Allen each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win.

Wednesday's victory gave the Spartans a sweep of the two-game season series with Wooster, after beating the Fighting Scots 17-7 on April 6 in Wooster. Wooster's Dean Brown suffered the loss on Wednesday to drop to 0-3 for the season.
