John Gassler of NYU Earns Second Team Academic All-America Accolades

From NYU Athletics

John Gassler of New York University's baseball team has been named Second Team Academic All-America by College Sports Communicators (CSC - formerly CoSIDA) after the graduate student's record-breaking 2023 campaign.

The Pittsford, NY, native was dominant on the mound this year as he had the team's lowest ERA (2.28) and opposing batting average (.184) which led to him establishing the lowest career ERA (2.48) and batting average against (.203) in program history.

Gassler also led the UAA with 93 strikeouts across 59.1 innings which broke his own single-season program record in the category. Then, in his final collegiate outing, the left-hander fanned 13 in 6.1 innings against Russell Sage College to again snap his own single-game program record. He had at least seven strikeouts in nine of his 11 appearances while finishing the season with a 5-4 record.

The Academic All-America recognition comes after Gassler was named Academic All-District last month. In order to earn the distinction, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 and be a significant contributor to their team.

Gassler helped lead NYU to a 17-16 record in 2023 for the Violets' sixth consecutive winning season.
