NYU Wins a Pair at New Paltz

From NYU Athletics

New York University's baseball team earned a pair of victories at SUNY New Paltz on Saturday to take two of three in the weekend series in New Paltz.

The Violets won both games today, taking game one 11-2 and game two 9-5 after dropping the opener 10-9 on Friday night.

John Gassler and Tyler Judge both had strong starts on the mound in the doubleheader sweep while Cam DunnNate Pallotta and Max Oliveira all homered in the first victory.

In last night's one-run defeat, NYU led 7-4 entering the fifth but the Hawks scored six over the next three innings and limited a Violet rally in the top of the ninth to just one run.

Nick Argenziano went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs, a double and an RBI, Dunn finished 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs and Richard Beggy was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.

In Saturday's opening win, the Violets tallied six runs in the top of the first powered by a Dunn's three-run homer and a two-run single off the bat of Russell Burton.

Gassler held New Paltz to just two runs over six full innings of work while NYU plated two in the third on a double from Pallotta, who also hit a solo home run in the seventh, and added another on Oliveira's solo shot in the eighth for a convincing victory.

Pallotta and Richard Beggy notched three hits apiece while Burton and Alex VanLandingham added two each.

Gassler allowed six hits and four walks while striking out three in his six innings on the mound. Joseph Augustine and Dylan Branca both had scoreless outings in relief.

Game two saw the Violets mount a huge ninth-inning comeback, scoring five runs in the frame after trailing 5-4 entering their final at-bats.

A walk and two Hawk errors pushed the tying run across before an intentional walk of Beggy loaded the bases. Tucker McDonough followed with a go-ahead sac fly, then a passed ball, error and RBI fielder's choice gave NYU a cushion entering the bottom of the ninth.

Ansel Balmer picked up the win on the mound after tossing the last two innings and allowing one run on four hits. Judge went 5.2 innings, giving up just one run himself on four hits while fanning six.

Oliveira was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Pallotta and Burton had two hits each in a balanced offensive outing.
