WashU Starts Brandeis Series With 17-Run Effort

The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated Brandeis 17-4 on Friday afternoon in UAA action. The Bears are now 22-8 overall with a 6-3 record in conference play.
 
The Bears put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Buday drew a lead-off walk and Harry Mauterer singled through the right side. Shane Pellegrino grounded into a double play but advanced Buday to third. Clayton Miller was hit by a pitch and Buday stole home to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Braden Mazone reached base on a short stop throwing error to score Miller for the 2-0 edge.
 
WashU added two more in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Miller and Mazone hit back-to-back singles up the middle. Kaden Bernhard followed with another single up the middle to score both Miller and Mazone for the 4-0 lead.
 
Brandeis broke through in the top of the fourth inning with a single run. Steven Simon led off with a single through the left side and Brian King doubled down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Drew Michaud drew a one-out walk before Aidan Schleer drew a two-out walk to score Simon to make it a 4-1 game.
 
The Bears exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jack Miller led off with a ground-rule double to left center and Hunter Goldberg was hit by a pitch. Buday laid down a bunt to the pitcher to load the bases and both Jack Miller and Goldberg scored on a Pellegrino single through the left side.
 
Clayton Miller followed with a single through the left side, scoring Buday. Mazone drilled a double down the right field line, scoring Pellegrino and Clayton Miller. Bernhard moved Mazone up with a sac fly to center and Magnus Dunn motored around the bases for an in-the-park homer to left center, giving the Bears an 11-1 lead.
 
The Bears tacked on another six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Buday led off with a single through the right side and Mauterer drew a walk. Pellegrino drilled a three-run homer to left field to put the Bears up 14-1. Bernhard doubled to left center and Dunn drew a walk. Jack Miller followed with a walk to load the bases and all three runners advanced on a wild pitch, scoring Bernhard.  Goldberg singled to left center, scoring Dunn and Jack Miller to make it a 17-1 game.
 
Brandeis rallied for x runs in the top of the seventh inning. Matthew Motiwalla drew a lead-off walk, followed by another walk of Schleer. Matt DiCenso drew a walk to load the bases and a walk of Sam Nugent scored Motiwalla. Alex Kim reached on a fielder's choice and Nick Heafey singled up the middle to score Schleer and Nugent to make it 17-4 game. The Bears ended things with a double play to stop the Judges' rally.
 
Buday finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Pellegrino went 1-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Clayton Miller finished 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI and Mazone finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Bernhard finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
 
Matt Lopes notched the win on the mound, going six innings with five hits and just one earned run to go with seven strikeouts.
