Washington University in St. Louis had seven student-athletes named to the 2015 Academic All-District Five Division III Football First Team, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Senior defensive lineman Brian Douglas, senior linebacker Matt Goad, sophomore defensive lineman Garris Goe, senior kicker Alex Hallwachs, senior tight end Mitch McMahon, senior defensive back Dylan Petre and junior running back Austin Smestad each took home the accolade for WashU.
Hallwachs earns the honor for the third-straight season, while Douglas, McMahon and Smestad were repeat selections from a year ago.
Douglas has started all eight games on the defensive line for the Bears making 31 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He made a season-high six tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack vs. Birmingham-Southern (9/26), and also added six stops at No. 23 Case (10/31). A three-time Academic all-UAA selection, Douglas has a 3.79 GPA while majoring in biology.
Goad has started seven of eight games for the Bears at linebacker and is third on the squad with 38 tackles (22 solo, 16 assisted). He made a career-high 11 tackles, two quarterback hurries, 1.5 tackles for loss and a 0.5 sack at No. 23 Case. A two-time Academic all-UAA selection, Goad has a 3.84 GPA while majoring in systems engineering and finance.
Goe has started three of eight games played for the Bears on the defensive line and has made 29 tackles (15 solo, 14 assisted). He is second on the team in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (7.0). Goe recorded a career-high nine tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks at No. 19 Centre (9/19). A 2015 Academic all-UAA selection, he has a 3.97 GPA while majoring in economics.
Hallwachs has connected on 11-of-17 field goals and 34-of-34 extra points this season. He leads the SAA in field goals, and is second in scoring (67) and third in extra points. Hallwachs is a three-time UAA Athlete of the Week and two-time SAA Athlete of the Week honoree, and was named to the Fred Mitchell Award List. Hallwachs booted a school-record 53-yard field goal at Berry (10/3), and set a single-season school record going 9-for-9 in extra points vs. Millsaps (10/24). He holds the WashU career record for field goals (41) and extra points (87). A three-time Academic all-UAA selection, Hallwachs has a 3.62 GPA while majoring in biology.
McMahon has started three of eight games played at tight end and is the Bears' sixth-leading receiver with 11 catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns. He has hauled in a catch in seven of eight games, including a career-high three grabs for 35 yards and a TD at Berry. A three-time Academic all-UAA selection, McMahon has a 3.56 GPA while majoring in operations and supply chain management.
Petre has started all eight games for the Bears at defensive back and has 31 tackles and is tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. Petre made a career-high 10 tackles at No. 19 Centre, and has recorded an interception in three of the last four games. A three-time Academic all-UAA selection, Petre has a 3.70 GPA while majoring in finance and economics and strategy.
Smestad has appeared in all eight games at running back and is second on the squad with 345 yards rushing. He is fifth in the SAA with five touchdowns. Smestad ran for a season-high 87 yards on 11 carries at No. 19 Centre (9/19). A two-time Academic all-UAA selection, he has a 3.91 GPA while majoring in chemical engineering.
To be eligible for nomination to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and must be a starter or an important reserve.
