Colt Morgan Hits Multiple Receiving Records; #21 CWRU Tops Saint Vincent 37-7 on Homecoming

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University sophomore wide receiver Colt Morgan notched 281 receiving yards, the most by an NCAA player at any level this year, on a program-record matching 15 receptions, as the 21st-ranked Spartans claimed a resounding 37-7 win over Saint Vincent College during Homecoming at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 5-1 overall with the win, including a 4-1 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Saint Vincent dropped to 1-5 overall and to 1-4 in the PAC.

Morgan also caught three touchdown passes, giving him 16 for the season, surpassing Bryan Erb's single season program record of 15, set during the 2015 campaign. Morgan's 15 receptions matches the program record held by Jason Cellura (2002 vs. Kalamazoo and 2003 vs. Wooster) and Justin Phan (2007 vs. Chicago). His 281 receiving yards blew past the previous program record of 222, set by Brendan Lynch in 2016 against Grove City and Dave Wooley in 2017 against Chicago.

Senior defense end Cameron Brown paced the Spartans' defensive effort with a 4.5 sack performance, the highest single-game total among Division III players this season, and now has a team-leading nine sacks this year. Sophomore linebacker Brian Victor added three sacks and eight total tackles.

Freshman quarterback Drew Saxton recorded his third-straight 300-yard game and his fourth overall this season, completing 22-of-32 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans erupted for 24 points in the second quarter.  With 13:34 remaining in the period, freshman kicker Robertson Albrecht put the team on the board with a 23-yard field goal. Saxton then completed touchdown passes of 29 yards and 42 yards to Morgan, giving CWRU a 17-0 lead with 4:15 remaining in the quarter. An 18-yard touchdown pass from Saxton to Spitalli with 21 seconds left gave the Spartans a 24-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

All three of the Spartans' touchdown drives in the second quarter were at least 79 yards or longer.

Case Western Reserve opened up the second half with a seven-play, 72 yards drive, taking a 30-0 lead on a 23-yard pass from Saxton to Morgan. With 1:07 remaining in the third quarter, junior quarterback Ryan Coolidge scored on a 13-yard run to put the Spartans in front 37-0.

The Case Western Reserve defense kept the Bearcats off the board until the closing minute of the game, when Saint Vincent scored on a 36-yard pass from Tekoah Guedes to Langston Hampton.

Overall, the Spartans defense totaled eight sacks in the game and held the Bearcats to 263 yards of total offense in the game, including just 46 rushing yards. CWRU totaled 515 yards in the game, including 430 through the air.

With four games remaining in the season, Morgan now has 52 receptions for 758 yards and 16 touchdowns, all team highs. Saxton has completed 69.3% of his passes for 23 touchdowns and just four interceptions, and moved within 43 yards of the program record for passing yards by a freshman in a single season.
