Washington University in St. Louis Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Lori S. White announced that Justin X. Carroll has been named Interim Director of Athletics.
Carroll replaces Josh Whitman, who was named the AD at University of Illinois. Carroll will serve as Interim AD effective March 1, 2016 through June, 30, 2017. The University will conduct a national search for a new AD in 2017.
“Justin is the ideal choice for this role, as for many years he has been a great supporter of the Department of Athletics, our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” said White. “I am confident he will do an excellent job in this interim role.”
Carroll has 40 years of progressive leadership in higher education administration and college student development, including the past 35 on the Danforth Campus. Since 1992, he has served as Dean of Students, and in 1997, was named Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students.
In 2009, Carroll was appointed Associate Vice Chancellor for Students and Dean of Students. He currently has oversight for several key student service areas including the Department of Athletics, The Habif Health & Wellness Center, Student Involvement & Leadership and the Danforth University Center (DUC).
Carroll has also been part of the senior student affairs management team that has developed several new programs, services, and facilities, all aimed at improving the quality of the undergraduate experience. From 1996 until 2015, he spearheaded an ambitious effort to improve the quality of student life through the expansion of student housing for undergraduates, including the development of a Residential College program on the South 40 and expanded living options for upper-class students, both on and off campus.
Twenty new residential facilities, including two new dining centers, have been opened on campus since 1998. More recently, Carroll has led the effort to improve the athletic and recreation facilities and in the fall of 2016, the University will open the state-of-the-art Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center.
He has been a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Delegates Committee and a WashU Voting Delegate to the UAA since 1992. He served as chair of the UAA Executive Committee/Chief Operating Officer of the Association from 2006-08, and was vice chair of the UAA Executive Committee from 2004-06.
“I am pleased to assume this important role and look forward to working more closely with the Department of Athletics staff and others to provide Washington University students with an exceptional athletic, recreation and fitness experience,” said Carroll.
In 2002, students renamed the residence hall leadership honorary, the Justin X. Carroll Honorary. In 2007, he was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences “Dean’s Award” and in 2008, Carroll received recognition as “Administrator of the Year” by Student Union, the University’s student government association.
He and his wife, Cindy King-Carroll, alum of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, have four children, three of which are WashU grads. Carroll’s oldest son, Chris, was a student-athlete at WashU.
