Senior McPherson Moore led five double-figure scorers
with 20 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a
Sunday afternoon victory at Case Western Reserve University.
The Eagles raised to overall record to 15-7, 7-4 in the University
Athletic Association following an 84-68 decision over the Spartans
who slipped to 13-9 in overall play, 5-6 in the league.
Moore closed out the afternoon converting eight-of-15 from the
field, including two-of-four from beyond the arc, in registering
his eighth contest of 20 or more points this season.
Senior Jake Davis and junior Alex Foster each
contributed 15 points, with Foster scoring 11 in the second half,
while junior Michael Florin totaled 12 points and chipped
in five assists. Junior Josh Schattie rounded out
the team's double-figure scorers, coming off the bench to add10
points, his fourth double-digit effort of the season.
Emory shot 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the floor while the
Spartans finished the game at 48.2 percent (27-of-56). While
the Eagles hit just four-of-18 from three-point range, they made up
for it with a solid defensive effort that saw them force 23 CWRU
turnovers while registering a season-high 17 steals, tying the
program's 14th-highest game total. Moore totaled
four thefts with Davis and Florin each registering three
steals.
Emory quickly added to a 15-point halftime lead, opening the second
half on a 12-5 run, with Foster and Schattie each scoring four
points in that stretch, to race to a 53-31 cushion with 16:00 left
in the game. The Spartans got to within 15 points with 13:15
on the clock following a pair of charity tosses by Matt Clark, but
four points by Moore and a pair by Davis pushed Emory's lead up to
60-39. A 6-0 spurt by Emory, ended by a Davis layup, enabled
the Eagles to claim their largest lead of the game, 80-53, with
6:10 remaining.
Emory turned in a solid offensive first half, shooting 53.1 percent
from the floor (17-of-32) in claiming a 41-26 halftime lead.
Moore pumped in 14 points, hitting six-of-11 of his field goal
attempts, including both of his triples on the day, to pace the
Eagles' scoring attack while Davis tallied nine points. Emory
trailed by a 16-12 count before rattling off a 14-4 spurt, capped
by a Moore three-pointer, to claim a 26-20 lead with 7:11 left in
the stanza. After a Spartan bucket, the Eagles scored seven
straight points, five coming from Davis to extend its advantage to
33-22 with 4:30 on the clock. Late baskets by Schattie and
Florin closed out the scoring for the half.
