Brandeis University rookie guard Nate Meehan (Lowell, Mass./Phillips Andover) scored a game- and career-high 22 points off the bench tonight, helping the Judges shoot 54% (28-52) overall from the field and 67% (8-12) from 3-point range as they knocked off the host University of Chicago Maroons, 78-63, in a University Athletic Association contest the Ratner Center tonight. With the win, Brandeis improves to 9-14 overall, 4-8 in the UAA, while Chicago falls to 15-8, 7-5 UAA.
Meehan notched 11 points in each half and shot 7-of-9 overall, 5-of-6 from downtown and 3-of-4 from the foul line to eclipse his previous career scoring high by eight points. He outscored the entire UC bench, 22-20. Meehan also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Brandeis put two other players in double figures. Rookie forward Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla./Sagemont School) added 20 points, hit third performance eclipsing the 20-point plateau this season. Cooper connected on 9-of-14 from the field, 1-of-2 from deep and 1-of-1 from the line. Sixteen of his 20 points came in the second half. Sophomore Tim Reale (Mason, Ohio/St. Andrews School) added 16 points, as he was 4-of-5 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Colby Smith (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) led the Judges with eight rebounds, as they owned the glass, 37-34. Cooper paced the squad with four assists and two steals.
Chicago got 13 points each from Nate Brooks and Alex Voss in the losing effort. Jake Fenlon added nine points off the bench, all on 3-pointers. Brooks also had a game-high 10 rebounds to finished with a double-double. Tyler Howard of the Maroons led all players with six assists and three steals.
Brandeis led for most of the game, with a pair of brief one-point deficits in each half. But their hot shooting enable the visitors to bounce right back. After hitting 47% (14-30) to Chicago's 33% (10-30) in the first half, the Judges were torrid in the second, when they connected on 64% (14-22) while the Maroons got worse at 31.3% (10-32).
The Judges have now won three in a row and 10 of the last 12 meetings with Chicago.
