Spartans Continue Winning Ways, Shoot Past NYU, 77-64

From University of Chicago Athletics

Senior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) scored 11 points, all in the second half, and the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team extended the best start in program history with a 77-64 win against New York University in front of a raucous Friday night crowd at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets drop to 9-4 (0-2 UAA).

Honored prior to tip-off for the achievement of his 1,000th career point earlier this season, McLoughlin shot 3-of-5 from three-point range to move into sole possession of second place on the school's all-time leaderboard. In 87 career games, McLoughlin has 195 threes, ranking behind only John Link's record of 199. The senior forward also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

As a team, CWRU was 8-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Julien Person (Paris, France/Second Baptist, Texas) and junior point guard Jimmy Holman(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) accounted for three of the treys as part of respective 14 and 12-point performances. Freshman forward David Black (Avon Lake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) and twin brother Eric Black (Avon Lake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) scored 13 and 10, respectively.

Evan Kupferberg paced NYU with game highs of 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Spartans started fast and rode an 11-0 run to a lead of 26-12 as junior guard Matt Clark (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University) nailed a three-pointer with 8:36 remaining in the first half. The lead grew to a high of 17, at 34-17, following a Person three at 4:56, but NYU was able to finish on a 10-4 run and get to the locker room down just 38-27.

In the second, NYU once again got as close as 11, at 58-47, when Patrick Burns hit a layup with 9:28 left to play. However, the Spartans answered with a 6-1 run to go back on top 64-48 as Person hit a jumper at 6:13. The CWRU held at at least nine until a three-pointer that brought the score to 71-64 with 35 seconds remaining.
