Spartans Make Statement With 89-78 Win at No. 7 Washington

Senior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) tied a career high with seven three-pointers, and the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team defeated No. 7 nationally ranked Washington University in St. Louis, 89-78, in Sunday University Athletic Association action at WU Field House.

The Spartans (14-4, 5-2 UAA) remain in a tie for first place in the conference with the University of Chicago, while the Bears (15-3, 4-3 UAA) fall into a three-way tie for second.

The win also snapped Washington's 19-game win streak in the series with CWRU. Prior to this afternoon, the Spartans' last win against the Bears came on January 14, 2005 in St. Louis. The Bears were also unbeaten at home in 2014-15 prior to today.

McLoughlin finished with a game high-tying 25 points. In addition, senior center Connor Edel (Akron, Ohio/Revere) tallied a career-high 16 points, while senior guard Julien Person (Paris, France/Second Baptist, Texas) was good for 16 points and seven assists. Junior point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) was also in double-digits with 10 points and five assists.

The Spartans finished with a season-high 15 three-pointers, just two shy of a UAA record. 

The Bears were led by Nick Burt, who recorded a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds with five steals. Matt Palucki scored 16 points and brought down nine boards for the hosts.

The Spartans led from start to finish and built their first double-digit advantage when freshman forward David Black (Avon Lake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) dropped in a three-pointer to make the score 24-14 at 11:47 in the first half. The Spartans would later spread the point gap to 15 at 6:25 as McLoughlin hit his third trey to bump the score to 38-23. The Bears were then able to finish the period on a 15-6 run to pull within 44-38.

Overall in the opening 20 minutes, the Spartans shot 17-of-32 (.531) from the field with nine three-pointers. McLoughlin scored 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Burt accounted for 20 for Washington U.

In the second half, the Bears scored the first four to pull within 44-42 as Palucki hit a jumper with 19:03 on the clock, but the Spartans picked up three-pointers from McLoughlin and Person to rebuild their advantage. Later with the CWRU lead at eight, the Spartans blew the game open with a 17-6 run, and an Edel layup made the score 77-58 with 6:57 remaining.
