From Emory University Athletics
Sophomore Jonathan Terry led three
double-figure scorers with a career-high 18 points in leading the
Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening win on the road at
Brandeis University. The No. 12-ranked Eagles notched their
third straight win and raised their overall record to 14-3, 4-2 in
the University Athletic Association, following a 65-51 decision
over the Judges who fell to 7-10 overall, 2-4 in the
league.
Terry concluded the evening knocking down eight-of-12 from
the floor, including two three pointers in four attempts en route
to his third double-figure scoring performance of the season.
Terry also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, the third time that
he finished as the Eagles' top performer on the glass. The
senior tandem of Michael
Florin and Josh Schattie each
contributed 10 points in the victory with Schattie accounting for
all of his offensive production in the second half while finishing
with six rebounds.
Emory shot 52.9 percent from the floor, its second-highest
mark of the season, hitting 27-of-51 from the field while Brandeis
finished with an effort of 38.6 percent (17-of-44), the ninth time
this season that the Eagles held an opponent to less than 40
percent from the field. Emory was successful on 40 percent
(6-of-15) from beyond the arc and posted a healthy 35-22 advantage
in rebounding. The Eagles have outrebounded 12 opponents on
the year and show a 12-0 record in those contests.
Emory got out of the blocks in stunning fashion, hitting
eight of its first 12 field goal attempts, while Brandeis sank just
two of its first 12 tries, in bolting to an 18-4 lead. Terry
scored 10 of his team-high 12 first-half points over a 2:34 span
that highlighted a 12-0 Emory run. Brandeis cut its deficit
to 10 points as a result of a 7-3 spurt, but a three pointer by
sophomore Austin DaGue followed by baskets
from Will Trawick and Florin, boosted
Emory's lead to 17 points, 28-11, with 4:41 left in the
stanza. Later, Emory scored six unanswered points, capped by
a Terry drive to the basket, propelling it to its largest lead of
the half, 34-16. A BU three pointer with 37 seconds left
closed out the scoring for the half. The Eagles shot a
season-best 65.2 percent (15-of-23), the third-highest effort in a
half by a Jason Zimmerman-coached team, from the floor over the
opening 20 minutes of play while stifling BU to a 34.8 percent
(8-of-23) effort. Emory held a 17-6 edge in rebounding along
with a 21-5 bulge in bench scoring.
With Terry and Schattie scoring six and four points,
respectively, Emory kept the pressure on the Judges early in the
second half with an 11-3 charge that gave the Eagles their largest
lead of the night at 45-24 with 12:29 remaining in the
contest. Emory led by a 50-34 margin before BU battled back
to within 11 points on a pair of occasions, the final time coming
with 5:03 on the clock. The Eagles put an end to the Judges'
comeback aspirations with a 10-2 run, beginning with back-to-back
three pointers by senior Alex Foster, the upped
their margin to 19 points.
