Senior forward Nick Burt scored a career-high 17 points and senior guard David Fatoki tied his career-best with 16 to lead the No. 9-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to a 75-68 win over Hendrix College Sunday afternoon in Memphis.
Senior forward Matt Palucki recorded his second straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Michael Bregman added a career-high nine points off the bench on a pair of three-pointers. Washington U. shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field, and hit 7-of-14 from three-point range. The Bears also hit 16-of-22 (72.7%) from the foul line.
Washington U. was hampered by turnovers early on as the Bears committed eight in the opening 10 minutes of play. Hendrix went on a 14-2 run and built it largest lead of the half at 22-13, with 10 points coming of WUSTL turnovers.
Bregman came off the bench for Washington U. and provided a much-needed lift. His three-pointer with 7:33 to play cut the lead to 27-20, and then a three-pointer by junior guard Luke Silverman-Lloyd made it 33-28.
Silverman-Lloyd's three ignited an 8-0 run, as the Bears got within one with 1:07 to play after a three-point play by Burt. Hendrix took the 34-32 lead to the locker room as Washington U. shot 47.8 percent from the field.
The Bears got the lead back for good at 43-42 with 14:08 to play after a lay-up by Burt. Hendrix would keep it close midway through the second half, and a 9-1 run by Washington U. got the lead to double figures at 58-48 after a free-throw by senior Kent Lacob. The Bears were 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 3:48 to seal the win.
Luke Vance (17 points) and Jordan Barrett (12) scored in double figures for Hendrix, which fell to 1-1.
Washington U. (2-0) returns to action Sunday, Nov. 16, against Hendrix College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Memphis.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. has won the two all-time meetings between the two teams … Palucki upped his career point total to 865 and is averaging 16.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season … The double-double for Palucki was the 10th of his career … The Bears are 2-0 for the seventh-straight season.
