Emory Holds Off Late CWRU Charge

Emory Holds Off Late CWRU Charge

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Jonathan Terry scored a career-high 24 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team an 86-82 down-to-the wire victory over Case Western Reserve on Sunday.  The Eagles upped their overall record to 11-5, 4-1 in the University Athletic Association following an 86-82 triumph over the Spartans who slipped to 8-8 overall, 1-4 in the league.

Terry's final three points of the afternoon came on a clutch three pointer with 26 seconds remaining  that erased a one-point CWRU lead and gave Emory an 84-82 edge.  One their ensuing possession, the Spartans' Matt Clark launched a triple try that missed its mark with Eagle senior Will Trawick grabbing the rebound and then getting fouled.  With just four ticks on the clock, Trawick calmly sank a pair from the stripe, sealing the victory for Emory.

Terry, who scored 17 second-half points, ended the afternoon converting nine of 14 from the floor, including a career-high tying five treys in eight tries.  Sophomore Adam Gigax added 21 points, his 10th consecutive double-digit performance of the season, sinking 10 of his 18 field goal attempts.  Trawick rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 15 points while tying for the team lead with 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the year.

With Gigax and Trawick scoring 12 and nine points, respectively, the Eagles claimed 40-36 lead at the break.  Holding a 42-39 edge in the early stages of the second half, Emory rattled off a big 14-2 blitz, with the final six points coming on back-to-back triples by Terry, to bolt to a 56-41 cushion with 14:45 on the clock.  Emory still led, 60-45, following a bucket by sophomore Chris Avant, but the Spartans regrouped and capitalized on five Emory turnovers during an 18-5 charge, finished off with a trey by Javier Alvarez, to draw to within two points, 65-63, with 8:39 remaining.  Emory then used three pointers by Gigax, senior Davis Rao and Terry en route a 9-0 blitz that pushed its lead back to 11 points with 7:19 remaining.  Down by 10 points with 5:36 left, CWRU mounted another comeback bid, scoring 14 of the game's next 17 points, the final three coming on a three-point play by Matt Clark, to go ahead by an 82-81 count with 43 ticks left.  Clark would led the CWRU scoring attack with 22 points.

Emory ended the afternoon by hitting 47.9 percent from the floor (34 of 71) compared to CWRU's 42.3 percent (30 of 71).  The Eagles were successful on 42.1 percent (8 of 19) from beyond the arc while the Spartans connected on 10 of their 32 opportunities.  Emory registered a 47-35 margin in rebounding with Rao tying Trawick for the team lead in that department.
