Three-point Barrage Keys Chicago Surge in 85-65 Victory Over IIT

From University of Chicago Athletics

The shortest road trip of the season occurred on Saturday afternoon when the No. 22-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team drove four miles to the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology on the South Side. The Maroons brought hot shooting hands with them and rained down three-pointers to beat IIT 85-65.

The Maroons (9-2) extended their winning streak to eight games and dropped the Scarlet Hawks to 2-12.

UChicago shot lights out from three-point range with a season-high 16 treys on 33 attempts (48.5 percent). Junior forward Waller Perez began the barrage 30 seconds into the game and the visitors led wire-to-wire after hitting five of their opening six shots. The Scarlet Hawks pulled to within 12-11, but that was as close as they'd get.

Sophomore forward Collin Barthel put on an eight-point run himself to make the score 25-15. Fellow sophomore Jake Fenlon matched that feat by scoring the last eight points of the half to put UChicago up 54-30 at the break. The Maroons hit 10 three-pointers in the first half, which was only one off from their previous best total of 11 in a game this season.

In the second half, UChicago's largest lead of the game came at 78-48, which was made possible by Fenlon's three-straight treys just prior. The Maroons employed their bench liberally throughout the contest and cruised to the 20-point win.

Senior Alex Voss led the Maroons in scoring courtesy of a big game from behind the arc. The forward shot 5-for-8 from three-point land en route to 19 points. In addition to his scoring, the senior mixed it up down low to grab six rebounds. Barthel and Fenlon ignited the Maroons off the bench, shooting a combined 8-for-15 from three. Their point totals (17 for Fenlon, 14 for Barthel) were both season highs. Perez contributed 14 points of his own as a starter.

UChicago dominated most the statistical categories, including rebounds (41-24), assists (20-10) and second-chance points (21-6). The Maroons committed 14 turnovers compared to 10 by IIT.
