Sophomore forward Andrew Sanders recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to a 71-70 victory at New York University Sunday at the Coles Sports Center in New York, N.Y.
WashU ran its winning to four games with the win and improved to 14-10, 6-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while New York fell to 19-5, 8-5 in the UAA.
Junior forward Clinton Hooks scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and hit 4-of-8 three pointers in the win. WashU shot 44.4 percent from the field and had a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the second half.
Hooks opened the game with a pair of threes, and senior guard Luke Silverman-Lloyd canned a triple to give WashU an early 11-6 lead.
The Bears went ice cold from the field midway through the first half and NYU responded with a 10-0 run the 26-16 lead. WashU went without a bucket for almost five minutes, and had just one field goal in the final 10 minutes of the half.
WashU shot 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from the field in the opening half. Sanders led the way with 11 points and nine boards. NYU turned 11 offensive rebounds into a 12-4 advantage in second-chance points, and scored 11 points off seven WashU turnovers.
WashU tied the contest at 45-45 with 12:49 left after a 10-2 run. Hooks and sophomore Jake Knupp each had a three during the run. Sanders' three-point play gave WashU the 48-47 lead, its first lead since early in the first half.
Tied at 62-62 with less than five minutes left, Sanders scored on a lay-up and sophomore guard Kevin Kucera recorded a steal and a bucket to put WashU up 66-62 and force the fourth timeout of the game by NYU. A putback by Hooks gave WashU a four-point lead at 70-66 with less than two minutes let.
After NYU's Ross Udine connected on a pair of free-throws with 6.9 seconds left, sophomore guard Jake Knupp snuck through the NYU defense to run out the clock.
Evan Kupferberg led NYU with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Violets were 9-of-21 from the free-throw line in the defeat.
