Emory Defeats Hampden-Sydney -- Runs Win Streak To Six Games

The Emory men's basketball team ran its win streak to six games Saturday afternoon with a decisive victory over Hampden-Sydney College. The Eagles closed out the 2016 portion of the schedule and raised their overall record to 8-2 following an 87-64 triumph over the Tigers who slipped to 5-6.

Senior Jim Gordon scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the first half and sophomore Spencer Osborne came off the bench to contribute a career-best 12 points to spark the offensive attack. Gordon hit four-of-eight field goal attempts, including a pair of three pointers, in registering his ninth double-figure scoring performance of the campaign. Osborne's total came as a result of his draining four treys in five tries. Senior Austin DaGue and junior Christopher Avant each came up with nine points with Avant grabbing a game-high 10 boards.

Emory held a 13-7 lead with 13:45 left in the opening half before going on a 10- run, with DaGue scoring six points, to bolt to a 23-7 margin with 9:41 on the clock. The Tigers closed to within nine points with 5:08 remaining in the stanza, but Emory closed out the half on a 13-4 spurt, highlighted by a pair of triples by Osborne and five points from Gordon, to claim a 40-22 lead heading into the break. The Eagles hit 42.4 percent (14 of 33) of their field goal tries, including 45.5 percent (5 of 11) from distance, over the opening 20 minutes, compared to HSC's field goal effort of 29 percent (9 of 31). 

Emory kept the pressure on during the early stages of the second half, outpointing the Tigers by an 11-2 margin, to race to a 51-24 cushion. Later in the stanza, a 7-0 burst, started by an Osborne trey and followed by buckets by Christopher Avant and DaGue blew the lead up to 61-30 with 12:33 remaining. All 15 Emory players saw action throughout the course of the contest with 12 finding their way into the scoring column and 14 finishing with rebounds.

Emory ended the game shooting 46.8 percent (29 of 62) from the floor and limited the Tigers to 33.3 percent (21 of 63).  The Eagles sank 11 from beyond the arc in 24 opportunities (45.8%), their sixth game of double figures this year, compared to HSC's 8 of 28 (28.6%). Emory outboarded HSC by a 49-33 margin, with the +16 showing the second largest of the year.
