Joe Timmes' Late Three-Pointer Gives NYU Win Over CWRU

From NYU Athletics

Senior captain Joe Timmes drained a three-pointer with 3.8 seconds on the clock to lead the New York University basketball team past Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, January 13, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Timmes' long-range shot was his fifth of the game and put the Violets in front for good, 73-72, in a back-and-forth contest which featured eight ties and five lead changes.

"(Assistant) Coach (Taylor) Roth drew up a great play," said Timmes. "We got Ross (Udine) the ball and I knew he was either going to kick it out or crash. I saw my defender help and expected the pass. It was a great feeling when that shot went in."

Case Western scored the first nine points of the contest and held leads of 16-7 and 24-12 before 12-0 NYU run tied the game at 24 apiece with 4:10 remaining in the first half. The Violets closed out the opening half strong and took a 34-31 lead into halftime.

Timmes hit two shots from deep early in the second half to help the Violets increase their lead to 10, but it was short-lived as the Spartans went on a run to take the lead back with just under 10 minutes to play. The visitors maintained the lead until Timmes' heroics in the final seconds.

Case Western had once last chance to win the game, but the NYU defense forced a turnover to clinch the victory, the Violets' first in UAA play this season.

"I'm just excited for our entire team," added Timmes. We've had a tough few weeks, but we've been battling hard in practice and it was good to go ahead late and get us the win."

David Black scored 24 points for the Spartans to lead all scorers. Timmes was NYU's top scorer, tallying 19 points in 34 minutes.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Cameron Moore (14 points), Udine (12 points) and Douglas Gertner (11 points) all joined Timmes in double-figures. Gertner hit a big three-pointer of his own to cut the NYU deficit to one point with 1:09 remaining.

- Jimmy Martinelli and Moore each recorded six rebounds to lead the Violets.

- Udine finished with a game-high five assists, including his pass to Timmes leading up to the final shot of the game.

"It was our first home UAA game and I thought we came out slow, but we picked it up and hopefully we can build off the momentum, concluded Timmes. "We have a young team and now everyone knows what it feels like to get a win in this tough conference."
