Six Score in Double Figures as Washington University Tops Century Mark in Win Over CWRU

The No. 6-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team had six players score in double figures as the Bears posted a 102-97 win over Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play Sunday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

WashU improved its overall record to 17-3, 9-0 in the UAA, while Case Western Reserve fell to 5-15, 0-9 in the UAA. The Bears have won 14-straight UAA games dating back to last year, the second-longest active conference winning streak in NCAA Division III.

Junior Andrew Sanders (15 points, eight rebounds), senior Michael Bregman (14 points), senior Clinton Hooks (13 points, seven rebounds, three blocks), junior Kevin Kucera (13 points, five assists), junior Matt Highsmith (11 points) and junior David Schmelter (10 points, five rebounds) all scored in double figures for WashU, who shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field in the win.

WashU connected on a season-high 36-of-54 free-throws, and had a 33-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Bears also had a season-high eight blocks.

The Bears started slow hitting just 2-of-12 from the field, but a three-pointer by Hooks cut the Case lead to 9-8. WashU took a 21-14 lead with 9:39 to play after a 9-0 run where Sanders had four points.

Case answered with an 8-0 run to take a 22-21 lead, but WashU followed with an 8-0 run of its own that was capped by a baseline jumper by Hooks. The senior from Los Angeles nailed a pair of threes in the final 2:30 as the Bears took a 42-37 lead to half.

Hooks and Sanders each scored 13 points in the opening half as WashU shot 41.7 percent (15-36) from the field. The Bears had a 14-2 advantage in points off turnovers. T.J. Duckett had 14 points and seven boards to keep Case in the game.

Bregman scored 10 of the Bears first 15 points of the second half as WashU jumped out to a 57-43 lead with 16:08 to play. The lead grew to 21 (67-46) after a 10-0 run by the Bears, highlighted by six points by Kucera.

WashU took its largest lead of the game (83-58) with 7:11 to play on a lay-up by sophomore Marcus Meyer. The Bears were 27-of-42 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Colin Zucker led Case with 20 points, while Regan Mahler had 19 points off the bench in eight minutes played.
