The New York University men's basketball team defeated host Brooklyn College 74-64 on Monday evening, November 27, at the West Quad Center in Brooklyn.

Jimmy Martinelli scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead NYU (3-1) to its second-straight victory.

"Jimmy is a tough kid," said NYU Assistant Coach Taylor Roth. "He does so many great things that effect the outcome of the game and it's great to know we can rely on him every night."

The win marks the first time the Violets have won consecutive games since they won three in a row to begin the 2016-17 season. Brooklyn College remains winless through five games this season.

NYU led 31-28 after 20 minutes, but a quick 6-3 run from the Bulldogs tied the contest at 34. The Violets answered, however, as they scored 12 of the next 15 points to go ahead 46-37 with 14:26 to play.

Three sophomores - Martinelli, Dom Cristiano and Cameron Moore - carried the Violets from there as the trio combined for 35 second-half points to help lead the Violets to the win against their Head Coach Joe Nesci's alma mater. 

"We've challenged our guys to come out with great effort in the second half, and they've done just that," added Roth. "This is the second game in a row where we were able to pull away from our opponent early in the second half and effort plays a big role in that."

Highlights:

- After allowing 85 ppg in their first two games of the season, the Violets have given up 67.5 in their last two.

- Martinelli's double-double was his second in as many games. Nine of the sophomore captain's points came from behind the three-point line and eight more came from the foul line (8-for-10).

- Cristiano, who scored 15 points in the second half, finished with 17 for the game and added eight rebounds.

- Ross Udine and Jule Brown led the Violets in assists, each dishing out five helpers. Udine also added 10 points and Brown hit a crucial three late in the game to ice the victory.

"We had many guys make selfless plays tonight," concluded Roth. "When we play that type of basketball we are at our best."
