NYU Completes Sweep of Carnegie Mellon

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's basketball team defeated host Carnegie Mellon University 71-59 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, February 2, at Skibo Gymnasium in Pittsburgh, PA.

NYU (10-8, 3-5 UAA) completed the season sweep of Carnegie Mellon (4-15, 0-8 UAA) for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Oscar Argemi Gonzalez's three-pointer broke a 45-45 tie with just under 12 minutes to play and jumpstarted an 11-2 NYU run. The three-pointer was the second in less than two minutes for Argemi Gonzalez as the freshman drained one at the 13:35 mark to tie the game.

Dom Cristiano also came up big for the Violets after halftime as the sophomore scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in the final 20 minutes. Two of those points came on a thunderous dunk over a Carnegie Mellon player to give NYU a 60-51 advantage with just under five minutes remaining. Cristiano then hit a three-pointer with 1:23 to play to put the Violets ahead by a comfortable 10-point margin.

Cristiano, who finished with 13 points, was joined in double figures by Ethan Feldman (13 points), Jimmy Martinelli (10 points) and Cameron Moore (10 points). Martinelli grabbed eight boards to lead the Violets, as well.

Patrick Ehland led all scorers with 14 points for the Tartans.

NOTABLES:

- The Violets shot 7-for-16 (43,8%) from three-point range. Martinelli and Argemi Gonzalez drained two each, while Feldman, Cristiano and Jule Brown each hit one. Carnegie Mellon was 4-for-18 (22.2%) from deep.

- Moore and Brown dished out three assists each.

- The 59 points allowed by NYU were a season-low.

"I think we're improving on defense," said Assistant Coach Michael McSloy. "Our effort has increased and our attention to detail is getting better."
