Washington University in St. Louis senior forward Andrew Sanders capped an outstanding four-year career by earning 2018 D3hoops.com, DIII News and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America honors, as announced Saturday.
Sanders was one of five players named to the D3hoops.com and DIII News All-America First Team, and was one of eight student-athletes on the NABC Third Team.
"I am very pleased that Andrew was named to the D3hoops.com and NABC All-America Teams. This is one of the highest honors a player can receive," said WashU head coach Mark Edwards. "I am very proud of the team this year and all the individual distinctions it has garnered, but especially the recognition that Andrew is getting on the national level."
Sanders is the fourth player in school history to earn D3hoops.com First-Team All-America honors joining Troy Ruths (2008), Aaron Thompson (2009) and Sean Wallis (2010). He is also just the fifth player in school history to earn NABC All-America honors joining Kevin Suiter (1987, 1988), Jon Bergman (1987), Ruths (2007, 2008) and Wallis (2010).
Sanders, the 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year, averaged a team-high 16.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in 25 starts at power forward. He scored in double figures in 24 games, including a season-high 29 points against Central (Iowa) on Dec. 9. Sanders ranked second in the UAA in scoring, third in field-goal percentage (.553) and eighth in rebounding.
He was a 2018 first-team D3hoops.com and NABC All-Central Region selection, and also picked up First-Team All-UAA accolades. In his career, Sanders was a three-time all-UAA and two-time all-region selection.
He appeared in 86 career games at WashU and ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,254 points. Sanders is also seventh all-time in free-throws made (336). He started the last 77 games of his career, scoring in double figures 69 times.
Sanders had 11 points and four rebounds for the West All-Stars Saturday in the NABC Reese's Division III All-Star Game in Salem, Va.
WashU finished the season with a 22-4 overall record, the program's 18th 20-win season. The Bears won their 15th UAA championship to earn the league's automatic bid and made their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance.
