Rochester Burst to Open Second Half Leads Rochester to Win Over CWRU

The University of Rochester opened the second half on a 20-6 run over six and a half minutes to defeat Case Western Reserve University, 71-58, at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday night.
 
The Yellowjackets ended two streaks with the victory. Rochester halted its own four-game losing streak and put an end to CWRU's five-game winning streak at the same time. The Spartans used those five wins to climb into third place in the University Athletic Association standings behind Washington (MO) University and Emory University. Both of those teams are ranked nationally.
 
Rochester is 14-7 overall, 5-5 in the UAA with four games left. Case Western Reserve is 12-9 overall, 6-4 in the UAA. The Spartans are tied for third with the University of Chicago.

Only two men scored in double figures for UR. Jacob Wittighad 18 points, hitting 8-10 from the floor. He added four rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 26 minutes.Ryan Clamage scored 10 points, had seven rebounds,  five assists, and one steal in 28 minutes.
 
The UR bench provided a huge boost. First-year center Ryan Algier played 19 minutes, scored eight points (4-5 from the floor), and matched Clamage for team rebounding honors with seven – five on the defensive end. Classmate Steph Peters-Smith scored five points in 10 minutes and grabbed three boards. Alexander Gamble had three 'fours' – points, rebounds, and assists, all coming in 16 minutes.
 
Patrick Benka contributed nine points as did Michael Mangan.
 
For CWRU, T.J. Duckett scored 14 points. Michael Volkening and Ignas Masiulionis scored nine points each. Michael Hollis had eight points and eight boards.
 
Duckett's layup kept CWRU within 26-21 with 6:47 to go in the first half. Wittig quickly drove for a layup and that ignited a 12-3 run over the next four minutes (Wittig and Algier had four points each). It put UR ahead, 38-24, and the Yellowjackets left for the locker room two minutes later with a 38-27 lead.
 
After two exchanges of baskets early in the second half, Rochester went on a 16-2 spurt to open a 58-34 lead. Clamage scored five of the 16 and Mangan had four more.
