Washington University in St. Louis senior forward Andrew Sanders concluded his career by earning 2018 D3hoops.com and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Central Region First-Team honors, as announced Wednesday.
"This is quite an honor considering WashU plays in a District that only has one other UAA school. This is a really good measure of how much the non-conference coaches in our district respected him," said WashU head coach Mark Edwards. "We had a great year and his consistency of play was a big part of the team's success. He competed at full speed every time he walked on the court, whether in practice or in a game. He also served as a great example to both his teammates and coaches of "how to play to win".
Sanders, the 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year, averaged a team-high 16.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in 25 starts at power forward. He scored in double figures in 24 games, including a season-high 29 points against Central (Iowa) on Dec. 9. Sanders ranked second in the UAA in scoring, third in field-goal percentage (.553) and eighth in rebounding.
He finished his career ranked 13th on the WashU all-time scoring list (1,254), and is also seventh in free-throws made (336).
WashU finished the season with a 22-4 overall record, the program's 18th 20-win season. The Bears won their 15th UAA championship to earn the league's automatic bid and made their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance.
