Ryan Algier of Rochester Men's Basketball Named Second Team Academic All-America Honoree

University of Rochester men's basketball graduate forward Ryan Algier was named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Second-Team Academic All-American®.Algier earns the second Academic All-America selection of his career, after being named a CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American in 2020-21. Algier also earned Academic All-District honors in 2019-20, as well as 2020-21 and 2022-23.
 
A Second-Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection and a D3hoops.com Preseason Third-Team All-American, Algier appeared in 22 games, making 19 starts for the Yellowjackets this season, averaging 14.5 points on 58.1 percent shooting to go along with 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. The Fairport, NY native recorded five double-doubles and helped UR win both the Chuck Resler Tournament and the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, en route to a pair of Tournament MVP honors.
 
The 6-10 forward ranked in the Top 10 in the UAA in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage, as well as nationally ranked in NCAA Division III in field-goal percentage, blocks, blocks per game, double-doubles and offensive rebounds per game.
 
"Ryan is one of the best student-athletes we've ever had in our program," Head Coach Luke Flockerzi said. "He has completely dedicated himself to doing everything possible to achieve at the very highest level as a student and as a basketball player. His work ethic and commitment to excellence have been unmatched."
 
Algier capped off his UR career, scoring his 1,000th career point in a win over Brandeis on Feb. 17, helped Rochester reach the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season, and finished his career with 1,054 points, 513 rebounds, 126 blocks, 113 assists and 59 steals. Algier's career 63.2 field-goal percentage ranks first all-time in program history, while the forward will graduate ranked fifth in blocks and blocked shots per game, and 10th in offensive rebounds.
 
The Fairport, NY native is a five-time UAA All-Academic selection and a three-time National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court selection and has garnered numerous academic and athletic awards throughout his time at UR.
 
Algier earned Dean's List honors every semester he was eligible, was named a Garnish Scholar in 2020-21, a Provost Circle Scholar in 2020, was picked as the department's John Vitone Sportsmanship Award winner in 2019-20 and the Louis Alexander Alumni Award in 2021-22. Algier is also a member of the Keidaean Honor Society and was elected Phi Beta Kappa.
 
An undergraduate double major in data science and business, Algier is currently pursuing his STEM-certified master's in business analytics at the Simon School of Business, where he was selected to the Dean's List for the Fall of 2022. Off the court, Algier also participated in the Simon Scholarship Weekend Case Competition, as well as Simon Serves Day, helping clean up local parks around Rochester.
 
While as an undergrad, Algier was a member of the Undergraduate Data Science Council, serving as the business manager his sophomore year, the UR Late Night Committee, and a captain of the St. Sebastian Society. Algier also was an active member of UR's VSAAC, serving as the vice president in 2021-22, helping to assist numerous community service efforts, including blood drives, raffles to raise money for cancer research and playing wheelchair basketball with Rochester Wheels.
 
Off-campus, Algier also worked with TOUR Basketball, serving as a player and coach for teens with special needs.
 
The 2022-23 CSC Academic All-America® Men's Basketball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average at his or her current institution.
 
The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes men's and women's basketball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
