Last-Minute Points Lead Tartans to Season Sweep of Emory

From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team swept the season series against Emory University with a 63-60 victory at home on Friday.

The Tartans are now 7-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) and 15-6 overall while the Eagles are 15-6 and 6-4.

How it Happened

  • There were six lead changes and four ties in the first half that ended with a 39-39 score.
  • Freshman Buckley DeJardin scored 12 of his career-best 20 points in the first half.
  • DeJardin scored eight points during a 10-3 run by the Tartans over a two-minute and 23-second span to give the Tartans a 33-32 lead and later hit a jumper outside the paint to make it 39-37 before Emory tied it with 31 seconds to play in the half.
  • The second half was similar with six lead changes and one tie.
  • The Eagles started with a 6-0 run before the Tartans scored nine of the next 11 points to lead 48-47 off a three-pointer by senior Nick Nakasian.
  • The Eagles would again go up by six, 54-48, ahead of the Tartans rallying to tie the score at 56-56 with less than three minutes to play on a jumper by junior Jack Stone following a steal by DeJardin.
  • DeJardin drained a three-pointer to make it 59-58 with 2:18 to go before Emory took a one-point lead on a driving layup by Benjamin Pearce with 57 seconds to play.
  • Junior R.J. Holmes answered with his own driving layup and Stone was fouled following a steal that led to two free throws and a three-point Tartan advantage with 24 seconds to go.
  • The Tartans played tight defense and forced Emory into a timeout with eight seconds to go.
  • The inbounds play from the sideline was tossed into the backcourt and a shot by Pearce with one second to go was to strong, hitting the backboard and off the rim for the Tartans' victory.
