The New York University men's fencing team split a pair of matches in the home-opener of its 2013-14 season on Thursday, November 7, at the Coles Sports Center.
NYU easily defeated Drew University in its opening contest 23-4. The Violets then lost in a 14-13 nail-biter against Stevens Institute of Technology.
Highlights vs. Drew
- NYU swept its opponents in foil, as Christian Vastola, David Gufstafson, and David Popkin all went 3-0 in their bouts.
- In epee, the Violets won 7-2 thanks in large part to Jon Philippou and Enrique Cavazos, who each went 3-0. Evan Accardi earned the other victory for NYU.
- The Violets also outscored Drew 7-2 in sabre. Stephen Teng and Quinten Burgunder went 2-1 and 2-0, respectively. Josiah Teng, Sander Siegel, and Alec Martini all went 1-0.
Highlights vs. Stevens
- Stevens edged NYU 5-4 in foil despite Vastola going 3-0. The Violet senior compiled an overall record of 6-0 for the evening.
- In epee, Stevens defeated the Violets 5-4. Phillipou led NYU by going 2-1, while Cavazos and Matthew Yin each earned wins, as well.
- NYU outscored its opponents 5-4 in sabre as Andrew Kelly and Seigel each went 2-1, while Burgunder went 1-2.
"Stevens is a lot stronger this year," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "They took us in foil this year, where last year we blew them away. Overall though, I thought we fenced well."
