NYU in 16th Place at NCAA Championships

Five members of the the New York University men's fencing team began competition at the 2016 NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 26. The men's and women's combined event is taking place Thursday-Sunday, March 24-27, at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

The women's competition was held on Thursday and Friday, but NYU did not have any participants.

The five Violets who began on Saturday combined to register 29 victories (worth 29 points), and have lifted NYU into 16th place in the 25-team competition.

Mickey Bak and Grant Williams led the way with seven sabre victories as the first 15 rounds of the 24-man round-robin competition began.

In foil, Daniel Sconzo recorded six wins while Philip Shin added four victories.

NYU's lone epee competitor, Hans Engel, produced five victories.

Columbia University's combined men's and women's team leads the overall competition with 147 victories. 

The Violets, the only NCAA Division III squad at the Championships, trail 15th-place Temple University by only one point.

The top 12 finishers in each weapon will earn All-America honors.

The final eight rounds of the round-robin competition will take place beginning on Sunday morning. The top four in each weapon will vie for their respective individual championships.
