The New York University men's fencing team has begun competition at the North American Cup (NAC), which is being held on Friday-Monday, January 6-9, at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.

The NYU 1 team of Mickey Bak, Quinten Burgunder and Grant Wiliams took first place in the men's sabre competition on Friday. The #2 seed out of nine teams, the foursome defeated #7 Team Quebec (45-32) and #3 Queen City Fencing (45-30) before upsetting top-seeded Tim Morehouse Fencing Club (45-36) in the championship.

"We beat quite a good team from Canada and then rolled from there," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Our boys just got it together. They all performed well and produced an outstanding result."

The eighth-seeded NYU 2 team of Matt Chen, Josiah Teng and Jess Gutierrez topped #9 Favaro Four before falling to Tim Morehouse in the quarterfinal round.

"Both of our teams did a great job today," said Mormando. "I'm excited to see how we compete over the next few days."

Competing individually, Sean Grant took eighth place out of 208 competitors in the junior men's foil. The freshman posted a 4-2 record in pool play before winning five matches in the direct elimination round to advance to the quarterfinals as the #50 seed.
