From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team placed third at
the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on
Monday, March 10. The Tartans carded a final round team score
of 293 after carding a 302 in the opening round Sunday to finish
with a 36-hole total of 595. Carnegie Mellon hosted the
two-day event at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Florida.
Emory University won the team title with a total score of 582, as
they edged out second-place University of Rochester (591) on the
6,768-yard, par-72 course. New York University placed fourth with a
615. Emory's freshman Colby Hipp shot one-under par for the
tournament (72-71, 143).
Junior Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) led the
Tartans with an even par 144 (73-71) over the 36-hole event.
Low carded a career-low one-under 71 on Monday afternoon to place
tied for second. Freshman George Qian (Bettendorf,
Iowa/Montverde Academy) tied a career-best with a round of one-over
par 73 on Monday to end the championship in eighth-place with a 149
(76-73).
Senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy)
carded back-to-back rounds of 75 to place ninth with a 150.
Freshman Ryan Karbowicz (Avon, Conn.) turned in a
career-best round during the final 18 holes with a two-over par 74
to card a two round total of 152 (78-74). Sophomore Ben
DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan) improved six strokes on
Monday to finish with a 162 (84-78).
Carnegie Mellon had three individuals play in the championships
with freshman Alex Woodward (Aurora, Ontario) leading the
charge with a 155 (75-80). Juniors Justin Fischler(Avon,
Conn.) and Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio) were the other two
individuals as they finished with scores of 162 (81-81) and 180
(90-90), respectively.
Low, Qian and Bangor earned All-UAA team honors. Low found a spot
on the first team while Qian and Bangor were on the second
team. This marks the second straight season that Bangor has
been honored. Last season he earned first team honors.
Head Coach Rich Erdelyi and Assistant Coach Joe Rudman earned UAA
Coaching Staff of the Year.
