Rochester Improves On Day 2, Ends 3rd At Hershey Cup

The University of Rochester golf team ended in 3rd place at the Hershey Cup golf tournament on Monday afternoon after an 18-stroke improvement in the second round at Hershey Country Club's East Course.
 
The Yellowjackets as a team fired a final round 311, tying for the best round of the day with two other schools.  Overall in the two rounds, Rochester finishes the tournament with a score of 640 after a round of 329 in Sunday's windy opening 18 holes.
 
UR's best performance of the tournament came courtesy of senior Dominick Schumacher who was competing as an individual at the tournament.  Schumacher placed in a tie for 4th of 87 golfers in the event after carding a round of 78 (+7) on the par-71, 6,551 yard course.  Schumacher ended with a two round total of 155 to finish just two strokes behind a tie for second place.

The five players eligible for the team scoring were led by junior Jona Scott who finished in a tie for 10th place after improving his score by five strokes in the final round to finish with a two round score of 157.  His round of 76 (+5) on Monday was aided by three birdies.  Scott finished the tournament +3 on par-4 holes, the lowest score in the field and also was tied for first among golfers in total birdies, ending with six in the 36-hole event.
 
A key round for Rochester in the final round was shot by senior G.W. VanderZwaag.  He carded a team best 74 (+3) on Monday and led the Yellowjackets with four birdies in the round.  VanderZwaag was the biggest mover in the field on the second day, improving his leaderboard position by 32 positions, going from T79 to T47 in one round.  His two day score was 166 which matched teammate Corey Mitchener who was entered in the tournament as an individual.
 
Another individual that drastically improved in Monday's round was sophomore Scott Chudacoff.  He dropped his score from 85 to 77 and ended the tournament in a tie for 28th place.
 
Sophomore Jason Paek was UR's second finisher among the five team golfers.  He carded a final round 82 and finished with a two day score of 163 to tie for 33rd.  Junior Garrett Sweeney also ended with 163 after his final round of 87.  Teammate Luis Arteaga ended tied for 37th at 164 after carding a round of 86 on Monday.
 
Rochester's final golfer in the lineup was junior Daniel Luftspring who finished in a tie for 56th place after his score of 168.  He carded a 79 during the final round.
 
Carnegie Mellon University rolled to the team title, winning the event by 11 strokes over Allegheny College.  CMU finished with a team score of 624 for 36-holes while the second place Gators shot 635 in two rounds.  Carnegie's Bradley Jennette also took home medalist honors by six strokes after shooting a two-day score of 147 (+5).  After an opening round 72, Jennette carded a 75 on Sunday to top the individual leaderboard.
