299 Score Has Rochester Mid-Pack at Oglethorpe

After shooting a combined score of 299 with all five golfers shooting below 80, the University of Rochester golf team sits in 7th place of 16 schools after the first round of the Royal Lakes Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.
 
The tournament is a strong field, with six schools in the latest GCAA Division III Top-25 Poll and another four colleges among others receiving votes.
 
The Yellowjackets got rounds of 73, 74, 75, 77 to reach the team score of 299, sitting just seven strokes out of 2nd and 12 behind first place.  The first round leader is Spalding with a score of 287, while 2nd-ranked Oglethorpe is 2nd (292), and 7th-ranked LaGrange is 3rd (293).  Transylvania is 4th and Huntingdon and Washington & Lee are tied for 5th.
 
UR was led by junior Daniel Luftspring who carded a +1 score of 73 on the par-72 Royal Lakes course.  Luftspring led the field in pars in round one with 15 holes at even, adding in two bogeys and one birdie.
 
Classmate Jona Scott had an opening round 74 (+2) and also was near the top of the par leaderboard, scoring even on 14 holes on Monday.  He added in one birdie and three bogeys in his round.
 
Senior co-captain G.W. VanderZwaag was third on UR in scoring with a 75 (+3) with a round featuring three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.  Sophomore Jason Paek finished off the scoring with a +5 round of 77 and senior Dominick Schumacher opened the tournament with a 79 in round one.
 
Overall as a team, Rochester led the field in par-5 scoring, shooting a combined -2 on the longest holes at the Royal Lakes course.  UR was +6 on par-3 holes and +14 on par-4 holes in Monday's round.
